“The air is unusually healthy”, noted a visitor, passing through the small village of Brooklyn in 1794. The 100 mostly one-story houses were “chiefly along the shore or scattered without plan”, he noted, and the streets were “bad, heavy, and unpaved, so that the smallest amount of rain makes Brooklyn muddy”.

The village of Brooklyn, directly across the East River from Manhattan, was the funnel through which the food grown on Long Island's rich farmlands passed to New York City. As New York City flourished, so did its nearest neighbor. Rowboats, sailboats, and horse-powered ferries plied the waters of the East River, and speculators and merchants began to buy land along the waterfront. Il ponte di Arta esiste sul serio: è un antico ponte in pietra che attraversa il fiume Arachthos nelle vicinanze di Arta, nell'Epiro in Grecia. Arta è ora una città di circa 44.000 abitanti, e sul fiume Arachthos passa anche un moderno ponte riservato al normale traffico; quello vecchio è rimasto un po' più in là, tra i monumenti di questa città le cui origini si perdono nella notte dei tempi. Presented on Intruders as a coda to provide a positive ending to the album, "All That is Different" was one of two songs originally written for Chris Foster's A Sting in the Tale stage show. Based on a line from William Blake's book, America A Prophesy, the song looks at the world of the future and revolves around a question: does it have to be that way? (Leon set more of Blake's lines to music in the 1960s - the poem, "The Garden of Love" - later recording it for Love Loneliness Laundry (1977).

This song was recorded separately from the rest of the album, with Leon not present (it features just Chris Foster and Sianed Jones). We might therefore speculate that it was originally intended for release as a Chris Foster recording, for whom it was originally written (No Chris Foster release is known to this reviewer).

È una poesia dal volume Fertsik yor lider un poemen / Quarant’anni di lider e poesie del poeta bielorusso ebreo Zalman Schneour, pubblicata a Vilna nel 1906.

Nei primi anni del Novecento Vilna fu uno dei centri propulsori della cultura yiddish. Su circa 180.000 abitanti 75.000 erano ebrei, 60.000 polacchi, 35.000 russi, 8.000 bielorussi e appena 4.000 lituani. La tolleranza a Vilnius era la regola, un retaggio della Repubblica polacco-lituana cessata un secolo prima. La rivoluzione del 1905 in Russia ebbe effetti positivi per il governatorato lituano. Con la I guerra mondiale la situazione precipitò: la Lituania subì le mire espansioniste di tedeschi, polacchi e russi con effetti devastanti.

Sotto il ponte alla Carraia, che è nel centro storico di Firenze, non ci passano né il Piave (quello che mormorava il 24 maggio 1915) né il Tagliamento; ci passa l'Arno, fin dal 1218 quando fu costruito per la prima volta sotto il nome di "Ponte Nuovo", perché fu il secondo ponte ad esser costruito sull'Arno a Firenze dopo il vecchio ponte romano. L'Arno, quindi, ci passava anche negli anni della “Grande Guerra”, vale a dire il periodo a cui deve risalire questa semplice strofa nella quale una donna fiorentina, una moglie, si rivolge al marito al fronte. Non si sa su quale musica fosse intonata, e nemmeno se una musica ce l'avesse per davvero. E' una strofa d'amore, ma estremamente pratica: nessuno sdilinquimento, nessun “soldato innamorato”, ma una dichiarazione di soccorso, di aiuto, di una moglie al marito. The tejano song "A la guerra ya me llevan" ("They're Taking Me to the War") (Buena Suerte Records # 929), narrated from the soldier's perspective, expressed opposition to being drafted to go to the war, leaning towards the anti-war side: "they're taking me against my will". Little Joe performed the song, a Mexican-American, born in Temple, Texas (17 October 1940), as José María De León Hernández. This political song helped established him as a major artist in the 1960s Chicano movement. He founded the record label Buena Suerte Records in 1968, based in Temple, TX. For conspiring to kill a Nazi officer, the Germans sent Kulisiewicz's teenage half-sister Łucja to the Ravensbrück concentration camp in 1944. On learning of her imprisonment, Kulisiewicz wrote this ballad, a fantasy-compilation of childhood legends and folktales whose villains, heroes, and strange, twisting plots brought to mind aspects of his own experience of life in a concentration camp. In the song, the wolf is based on the title character of a favorite childhood tale of Kulisiewicz, Bajka o żelaznym wilku (Story of the Steel Wolf, 1911) of Wacław Sieroszewski. One form of torture routinely meted out at Sachsenhausen went under the innocent name of “Sport”. “My gate” recalls a typically malicious competition devised by the SS, the “Indian Dance”. As guards barked out the moves, prisoners were forced rapidly to raise their arms, look to the sky, whirl around, drop to the ground and stand again. This sequence would be repeated over and over. Kulisiewicz reports that inmates “vomited after such 'dancing', that the entire Apellplatz [assembly area] swayed before one's eyes, and with it the damned gate of the SS command”. Kulisiewicz first heard this popular central European tune sung to the Serbo-Croatian lyric, “Moja mala nema mane”.

David Peel è stato sicuramente un precursore del punk, nella musica (un protopunk acustico e da strada) e nei testi irriverenti. Grazie a questo album David Peel fu notato e "riscoperto" da John Lennon che, nel suo periodo più politico, produsse l'album successivo della band. E forse lo stesso Lennon scrivendo la sua God aveva in mente anche questa omonima canzone, molto più sarcastica e diretta!

J’en ai entendu beaucoup de versions, dit Lucien l’âne en riant, mais à l’origine de ma mémoire, j’ai gardé celle-ci – assez cohérente, même si je pense qu’elle camoufle une autre signification plus ancienne et mystérieuse, liée à l’histoire de la ville et du Comté de Foix. La voici dans son intégralité :

Oui, certainement, Marco Valdo M.I. mon ami ; d’ailleurs, je connais la chanson « Il était une fois, un petit bonhomme de foi… »

Oui, oui, bonne idée, Lucien l’âne mon ami, je n’y avais pas pensé, mais je vais en faire une vraie chanson de cette comptine enfantine dès qu’on en aura terminé avec celle-ci, car il faut battre son frère tant qu’il est chaud, comme disait Caïn. On y reviendra prochainement, je le promets une fois. Cependant, ici, il s’agit d’une chanson d’Henri Tachan, un de ces chanteurs-auteurs de leurs propres chansons, un de ceux qui ne tenaient pas leur langue dans la poche, comme, par exemple : Brassens, Ferré, Brel, Fanon, Béranger.

"Angelo Serighelli, classe 1950, è stato un chitarrista, cantante e cantautore della scena musicale del bergamasco. Tutti lo hanno più semplicemente conosciuto con il soprannome di India, che pare gli sia stato attribuito per la sua particolare predilezione per certe sonorità orientali già dalla fine degli anni '60. Nel corso della sua carriera ha militato, a cavallo tra gli anni '60 e '70, nei "Raminghi", band bergamasca di stampo progressive con sonorità di tipo psichedelico. Realizzarono tre 45 giri e un album (tutti con etichetta Bentler) tra il 1970 e il 1975. (...) Dopo l'esperienza con i Raminghi incise per diversi gruppi e pubblicò l'album solista "Bio Feed Back" con la Emmebì Records.
