This song was written in early September 2006 in response to the release of Murat Kurnaz from the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base after being detained for over four years. We are posting the song because of numerous requests. At this point the song may serve to raise questions as to the status of the Guantanamo detainees. This is a heart breaking legal and moral issue. We can not forget these human beings.
Nor can we forget John Walker Lindh who has also served over four years of a twenty year sentence imposed without any hard evidence against him. Recently he was transferred from a medium-security prison in California to Supermax, the Federal Government's most secure prison. No explanation has been given.
Our prayers are with him and others who have been imprisoned unjustly.
We offer the song, as requested. Just a rough version, written with Tony Shanahan.

On March 26, 2003, ten days after Rachel Corrie's tragic death, Patti Smith appeared in Austin Texas, and performed a highly memorable anti-war concert. Patti prefaced her poetic song "Wild Leaves" with the following comments, and subsequently wrote a new song "Peacable Kingdom" which was inspired by and is dedicated to Rachel Corrie.
PATTI SMITH: I want to dedicate this little song to Rachel Corrie. Rachel Corrie was a 23-year old girl from Tacoma [Olympia] Washington, who went over to the Gaza strip to protest the bulldozing of the homes of the citizens of Palestine. The album title Gung Ho has so many implications. What were you trying to communicate with the title?
PS: Well, it's got two things. One, it's a play on words, because the title cut "Gung Ho" is an overview of the life of Ho Chi Minh, looking at what drove him as a patriot and a person who foresaw and worked all his life on creating an independent Vietnam. He was a very special man, but he was also a very common man. And I thought of him sort of like Gunga Din, who had those qualities. So it has that "gung-ho" sort of play on words.
But also, when I was a kid, my father fought in World War II, and my mother always used to use that term, gung-ho. It was used for someone who was putting their whole heart [into something] and really believing in what they were doing and even going into a difficult task with positive, idealistic energy. “We [me and Fred] had both protested the Vietnam War when we were young. We had been part of the ’60s, where our cultural voice was really strong, and we were trying to write a song that would reintroduce that kind of energy. It’s sad for me but quite beautiful.
It was really Fred’s song – even though I wrote the words, he wrote the music; the concept was his, and he wanted it to be a song that people sang all over the world to inspire them for different causes.
And he didn’t live to see that happen, but I have. I’ve seen people. I’ve walked in marches all over the world where people spontaneously started singing it, you know, whether it’s been in Paris or with the Palestinians or, you know, in Spain or... (Continues)
