Quel che accadde il pomeriggio del 4 agosto 1936 nello stadio olimpico di Berlino apparve agli occhi del mondo come uno schiaffo al regime nazista nel fulcro del suo potere: una medaglia d’oro vinta da un uomo di colore nella Germania ariana.
Tuttavia non è quella medaglia, per quanto splendente, a suggellare una vittoria umana ben più considerevole: un’amicizia nata sul campo di gara, a dimostrare che la rivalità non si traduce sempre in antagonismo. E che il valore di un’amicizia non si misura nel momento in cui nasce, ma dalla sua capacità di sopravvivere al tempo. Per questo è necessario partire dalla fine.

Nazzareno Guglielmi, detto Cinicchia (1830-1901?), nativo di Assisi, fu un noto brigante che operò nel territorio tra l’Umbria e le Marche, allora parte dello Stato Pontificio. Le sue gesta furono mitizzate dalla cultura popolare tanto da far affermare allo storico Parrini che “… fu temuto dai ricchi e amato dai poveri i quali, spesso, finiva con l’aiutare”. Successivamente riuscì a fuggire in Argentina. Come sia scomparso non si sa, ma da una sua lettera ai parenti lo sappiamo ancora vivo nel 1901. Un grazie per questa canzone va all’attore scrittore Amico Valter Corelli autore di ricerche e libri sul brigante Cinicchia.

Volevo inserire, poi, un brano tradizionale della tradizione napoletana che parlasse di emigrazione verso il Sud America e mi sono messo, con Ciro De Rosa, alla ricerca ma non abbiamo trovato nulla perché gran parte dei brani raccontano di emigrazione verso il Nord America dove le difficoltà che incontravano gli emigranti rafforzavano il loro senso di appartenenza alla terra che avevano abbandonato. Ho deciso, così, di inserire come bonus track “Italia bella mostrati gentile” che è uno dei pochi brani che parla della nostra emigrazione verso il Sud America.

E' stata poi ripresa qualche tempo dopo da L'Acquavite in una nuova versione.
La canzone era in origine in parte ispirata dai giorni della Liberazione di Ravenna nel Dicembre 1944, e in parte dallo spettacolo "La banda Corbari" dei Briacabanda.

In these days of relative calm in the north-eastern section of Ireland the Police Service of Northern Ireland proudly claims to be ‘Making Northern Ireland Safer’. They’ll have you believe that they’ve moved on from the notorious days of the B-Specials and Royal Ulster Constabulary. The residents and Ciarán Murphy know differently and Once Upon A Time In Ireland opens with a angry blistering attack on Northern Ireland’s police force that is more punk rock than any punk song I ever heard.
Armed only with an acoustic guitar, Ciarán comes across sometimes as a one-man punk army.

‘Nine hours’ is again an incredible song where Ciaran, in jail for Republican activities, is given nine hours compassionate leave to attend the funeral of his father. During the song Ciarán recalls childhood fishing trips with his Da and the history he taught him of the places they visited while he follows his Dads coffin in utter personal agony, regretting years of non contact. Nine hours later that day a steel door slams shut and that’s fucking it.

not in my wildest dreams.
But life is cruel and sometimes twisted,
like their judges and it seems.
that nothing here is sacred and I know what that means.”
A song that will take your breathe away the beauty and sadness of it.

This track never fails to leave me in tears, as Ciaran sings to his father about the impact of Ireland’s struggle on the old man. From fighting for Great Britain in World War II, to joining a revolutionary army in Ireland, to crying for the ten hunger strikers who died in the Maze prison in 1981. The old man fell under the spell of whiskey and was unable to keep it together. Simply breathtaking.
