De quoi Katerina Gogou avait-elle le plus peur ? Elle nous le dit ici, avec la brutalité parfaite et sincère qui lui était coutumière. Elle avait terriblement peur de devenir une “poétesse”, et donc, d’une certaine manière, d’être engloutie par l’establishment. Elle avait peur, elle qui écrivait ses dissonances littéralement avec la matière de sa vie, d’être réduite à « contempler la mer » enfermée dans une chambre, en essayant d’oublier. Katerina Gogou voulait tout sauf contempler et oublier. Elle avait peur de devenir un pourvoyeur d'“opinions” vers lequel on se tourne pour obtenir une opinion plus ou moins élevée et éclairée.... Il testo del 1841 che qui si traduce (per “testo del 1841” si deve ovviamente intendere la data di prima pubblicazione a stampa; come ben messo in luce da Elia Sponton, il testo tradizionale è sicuramente anteriore) proviene da The Vocal Melodies of Scotland, propriamente: The Vocal Melodies of Scotland united to the songs of Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, and other distinguished poets, Arranged with symphonies and accompaniments for the piano forte, a cura di Finlay Dun [1795-1853] e John Thomson [1805-1841]. Pubblicato da Paterson & Roy (27 George Street, Edinburgh), il volume non è in realtà datato e si ritiene il 1841 come anno più probabile, anche se potrebbe essere retrodatato al precedente 1840. Parecchie versioni della ballata hanno grafie irregolari e “fantasiose”, come ad esempio “Loch Loman”. La prima versione a stampa ha invece una grafia... (Continues)

E' possibile che la versione eseguita dai Corries (dall'album del 1987 Barrett's Privateers) rifletta vicende del periodo Giacobita, e sicuramente ha un plot narrativo molto più chiaro e completo (una ballata popolare autentica, si ricorda, ha fini narrativi e non “poetici”, una cosa che i raccoglitori sette o ottocenteschi non avevano affatto chiara, presi dal mito della “musa popolare” e che, sovente, intervenivano sui testi per “migliorarne la poesia” creando a volte capolavori sì, ma falsi; l'esempio classico del genere, a parte i geniali pastrocchi di Sir Walter Scott, è il Tam Lin manipolato, o meglio riscritto,...
