What was the inspiration for “Some Boys Grow Up To Be Soldiers”?
The character in this song is nobody in particular. We all know him. He’s somebody’s uncle, friend, neighbor, father, son. He’s far from perfect, but when he served he was willing to lay down his life. It didn’t come to that, but he lost some essential part of himself along the way. I think of this as an anti-war song. Not a song about the men and women who die in wars, but about the survivors who return to find home is no longer their home. Of course “he’ll never admit what it cost” and so there is nothing to do but soldier on.

Avant même d’aller plus loin, je dois, Lucien l’âne mon ami, avouer mon forfait, un forfait au regard de la mission du traducteur, car ma version française s’est quelque peu éloigné de la chanson « Il topo che mangiava i gatti » de Gianluca Lalli, ce qui se traduit par « Le rat qui mangeait les chats » ; à comparer les deux titres, car comme on le sait, j’en ai fait « Le Rat de Bibliothèque », on imagine une histoire différente. Je peux même jurer que je n’aurais pas pu faire autrement ; il est venu tout seul ce forfait. J’en ai donc fait une chanson française.
Soit, dit Lucien l’âne. Je vois que c’est là un forfait parfait, un vrai forfait bien fait, car tu es un fortiche ; au lieu de le buter le chat a lié amitié avec le rat, ou l’inverse. Ça, c’est juste pour montrer que... (Continues)

Per quanto ne so Leo Ferré l'ha interpretata in pubblico per la prima volta il 10 maggio 1968 nella sala della Mutualité del 5ème arrondissement, in piena rivolta studentesca, durante una serata della Federazione Anarchica, la stessa notte delle prime barricate nel Quartiere Latino. Su disco appare per la prima volta nel bellissimo album del 1969 che contiene infatti anche Comme une fille dedicata alle giornate del maggio francese.

Mon cher ami Lucien l’âne, tu as certainement entendu parler de cette légendaire Nef des Fous, qui a surgi au milieu d’une Europe ballottée par les guerres de religion, car voici une chanson de Reinhard Mey qui porte le titre de La Nef Des Fous dans sa forme originelle allemande de Narrenschiff et aborde cette histoire à sa manière qui est bien différente des deux versions italiennes que nous avons déjà rencontrées : celle d’Ivan della Mea (1975) – La nave dei folli et celle de Gianluca Lalli (2015), également intitulée, La nave dei folli . Très différente d’abord par sa langue évidemment, je ne parle pas seulement de la langue allemande, mais de la manière particulière dont Reinhard Mey traite cette langue ; et puis, son titre qui la rapproche directement du Narrenschiff d’origine et des circonstances dans... Das Narrenschiff – LA NAVE DEI FOLLI est un ouvrage satirique en allemand alsacien de Sebastian Brant, dont la première édition a été publiée en 1494 à Bâle.
La chanson de Gianluca Lalli est un hommage à l’anthropologue Michael FOUCAULT et s’inspire de l’essai « Histoire de la folie à l’époque classique » dans lequel l’anthropologue français fait allusion au mythe de la « Nef des Fous » en affirmant qu’il peut être basé sur des faits réels, puisque certaines époques antiques et médiévales mentionnent des navires avec une « cargaison insensée ». Selon ces récits, les imbéciles n’étaient pas autorisés à accoster dans les ports.
Moi, dit Lucien l’âne, je voudrais juste rappeler une autre chanson italienne intitulée pareillement – La nave dei folli ; une chanson qu’interprétait, c’était il y a bientôt presque un demi-siècle Ivan Della Mea et dont tu avais fait une belle version française sous le titre La Nef des Fous en 2009.

Brano popolare di area settentrionale (soprattutto piemontese e lombarda) sulla partenza per il servizio di leva; probabilmente, in origine, un canto di cantastorie a cavallo tra gli ultimi anni del XIX e i primi anni del XX secolo, comunque risalente a un periodo in cui la ferma militare aveva ancora la durata di tre anni. Del canto si ebbe una registrazione il 6 febbraio 1965 a Fornero Valstrona (Novara), registrazione qui riportata nell'apposito box; nel 1954 era stato intercettato anche da Lomax e Carpitella in provincia di Vercelli. La Fonoteca Nazionale Svizzera ne conserva comunque una registrazione del 1930 (Audio Track B17) interpretata in duetto dai cantastorie Attilio e Pasqua Guerini. On October 24 1975, Icelandic women observed what was called Kvennafrídagurinn, (The Women's Day Off), known outside Iceland as the Icelandic Women's Strike. It was estimated that at least 90% of Icelandic women participated by not going to work and by doing no housework. An estimated 25,000 women gathered for mass a demonstration in downtown Reykjavík. The total population of Iceland was only 216,695 at the time. Mass meetings and demonstrations were also organized in smaller towns around Iceland.

Translator's Note. James Thurber's poem The Last Flower was written in 1939: that's the reason why, and there's nothing to be added. One peculiarity of the poem is that it has inspired and originated two songs in two different languages: Italian (L'uomo, la donna e il fiore) and Icelandic (Síðasta blóm í heimi). This is the page of the Icelandic song. Though contributed in 2014, it had never been translated in any language whatsoever. The page includes now an Italian translation (a word-for-word one) and this English version, much further removed from the Icelandic lyrics written by Magnús Ásgeirsson (and not fully respecting the poem's layout) but, hopefully, without betraying the Icelandic poem's spirit and meaning.
