Questa canzone, legata alla figura tipicamente risorgimentale di Friedrich Hecker (che per la Germania fu quasi un nascente ma sfortunato Garibaldi) ebbe innumerevoli varianti; ci sono diversi libri che ne trattano: tra questi, consultabili anche online, di H. C. Grünefeld “Die Revolution marschiert”, e “Revolution und Revolutionslieder in Mannheim 1848-1849”.
Questa canzone in effetti non è certo pacifista, e la sua carica violenta è stata reimpiegata nei decenni successivi contro nemici che non erano solo i potenti e gli oppressori; tra le varianti del periodo post-1848 esistono anche quelle antisemite, ovviamente valorizzate dal nazismo.
Quanto alle spiegazioni da dare nella traduzione:
per porpora, come si ricava anche da altre versioni, si intende i mantelli color porpora, per stivali i grossi boccali a forma di stivale, di varia capacità, ordinariamente da 2 litri, ma anche fino a 5.

Comme « second acte » de mon retour sur le site, voilà le grec. Et, évidemment, il ne pouvait pas être autre que « mon » Xylouris ; mais avec une chanson inusuelle, ironique, imprégnée d’humour noir et de sa vie. Karyotakis, en somme. Elle est tirée de l’album Σάλπισμα, que le dramaturge et le décorateur théâtral Loukas Thanou réalisa à partir de poésies, en plus de Kostas Karyotakis, de Kostas Varnalis, Aris Alexandrou et D. Thanos (c’est, entre autre, le même album dont est tiré Η μπαλάντα του Kυρ-Μέντιου). È di corporatura minuta e ha l'aspetto ordinario; si spoglia alla bell'e meglio e si tuffa in acqua. Un bagnante. Chiunque lo avesse visto non avrebbe pensato altro; invece era un uomo che intendeva darsi la morte.
Era stato, fino ad allora, uno dei poeti più misconosciuti del suo paese; si chiamava Kostas Karyotakis. Era nato il 30 ottobre 1896 in una delle tante Tripoli sparse per il Mediterraneo; la sua era nel Peloponneso. Una vita ordinaria; una grossa delusione d'amore nell'adolescenza, di quelle che segnano per tutta la vita; un lavoro da avvocaticchio alla prefettura di Preveza, dove si occupava delle assegnazioni di terre e immobili ai profughi greci dell'Asia Minore.... Alright. I never believed that people came to my shows, or rock shows in general, to be told anything. But I do believe that they come to be reminded of things, to be reminded of who they are, that they're most joyous at their deepest, when life feels full. It's a good place to get in touch with your heart and your spirit. It's good to be amongst the crowd, be reminded of who we are and who we can be collectively, and music does those things pretty well. Sometimes, they can come in pretty handy.
And particularly these days, some reminding of who we are and who we can be isn't such a bad thing, ya know, uh. I uh, I re- I refer back to the weekend of the March for our Lives when we saw all those young people in Washington and citizens all around the country remind us of what faith in America and what real faith in American democracy,...
