Björn Afzelius wrote the following notes in his 95 Sånger (95 Songs) book:
"Jag satt en dag på stranden i Italien och läste Herald Tribune. På sidan sju redovisades ett förhörsprotokoll från Nicaragua. En Contrasoldat hade fått nog av sin egen verksamhet och frivilligt överlämnat sig till Sandanistregererigen i Managua. När jag läst artiklen frös jag som en hund i solskenet. Jag lämnade stranden och gick hem och skrev texten direkt ur tidningen. Offret i sången Ar bara två av de femtiotusen dodade nicaraguanska bönder, vilkas liv Ronald Reagan har på sin samvete - om han nu haft en sådant."

Data la prima strofa che delinea in poche parole (quando dovette andare... una guerra spacca come una sassata...) la vicenda di Ferruccio Guccini (1911-1990) uno dei tanti non entrati nella storia, mandato in guerra, catturato in Grecia (Corinto) il 9 settembre 1943 e internato nel campo di Wietzendorf vicino ad Amburgo, forse potrebbe anche essere tolta dagli extra.

cara francesca. non si tratta di invidia quella espressa nella canzone ma di satirica. mühsam spesso con le sue poesie ha suscitato sdegno peche´sono state capite male. con la frase finale intende che ( esattamente come da brecht seeräuber-johnny) che i poveri se potessero sarebbero esattamente cosi´egoisti e sfruttatori come i ricchi se potessero. almeno questo e´un tipico pensiero di mühsam ,brecht e anche hasek

"La città vecchia" is set in old Genoa where De André spent much time, with its little back alleyways, bars, prostitutes, and the hard lives of the poor people and criminals who lived there on the margins of society, the opposite of what De André experienced with his own upper-middle class upbringing. The song was inspired by a poem of the same name by Umberto Saba set in the port zone of Trieste. And the first two lines are quite similar to lines from a poem by Jacques Prévert, "Embrasse moi": "The sun of the good Lord doesn't shine on our parts/It already has too much to do in the rich quarters." Throughout his songwriting career, De André regularly took inspiration from and borrowed from other works of literature and music. (Translation notes: 1. Non sapevo niente di tutto quello che c'era dietro al testo di una canzone dolcissima (da ragazzi la ballavamo come 'lento') e che nel mio primo tentativo di interpretazione (una semplice traduzione automatica) mi era completamente sfuggito.
Non posso che dirvi grazie per l'opportunita' che mi avete dato di capire e apprezzare ancora di piu' l'autore. Da oggi assocero' questa bella lirica ad un altro artista che sogna e ci fa sognare un mondo libero dalle guerre (Mihyazaky con i suoi cartoni).

Sono d'accordo con Leti e Stefano Sgad, Ivan è stato il più grande cantastorie tra i cantautori italiani (e non sono d'accordo con RV sull'ermetismo dei testi, che sono in genere molto comprensibili). "I lupi" sono un racconto per quadri del secolo breve italiano, almeno fino ai primi anni del secondo dopoguerra.
L'episodio della signora che chiede al reduce dalla Russia se ha visto suo figlio si ritrova molto simile nel libro di Eugenio Corti. Però il libro di Corti esce nel 1983, "I lupi" esce nel 1977. Può darsi che tutti e due si siano ispirati allo stesso episodio. Oppure Ivan conobbe Corti che gli raccontò l'episodio (Corti effettivamente fu un reduce dalla campagna di Russia, e probabilmente quell'episodio è autobiografico). Oppure Ivan lo lesse in qualche altro scritto di Corti. Corti cominciò a scrivere "Il cavallo rosso" nel 1972, anche a partire da materiale precedente (ad esempio... (Continues)

Col mio gruppo abbiamo fatto una versione di questo brano e spesso anche io mi sono chiesto cosa volesse dire esattamente "accounting" e propenderei per l'ultima osservazione qui sopra: secondo me si tratta di "fare i conti" in senso figurato.
Quindi si potrebbe dire "La ballata della resa dei conti"

con solo una correzione perché gli "scintillatori" mi sembra una traduzione sbagliata di shimmers, io propongo "bagliori". Da notare che originariamente nel testo in questa pagina avevamo "chimeras" e non "shimmers".
