Krzyk - LE CRI est un album composite de chansons écrites dans les années 1974-80, qui est un diagnostic de l’homme dans une situation sans issue, rendue impossible par l’histoire et la politique, et même par ses faiblesses : l’unique arme est l’ironie, ou le crie de désespoir.

In effetti la canzone si può leggere su molti piani. Brown Sugar può essere una bella ragazza nera (come l'allora fidanzata di Jagger, l'attrice e cantante Marsha Hunt) oppure una varietà di eroina. Se la prima strofa sembra riferirsi alla tratta degli schiavi, poi abbiamo anche una spregiudicata regina del circo che si porta a letto i sedicenni neri. Sesso, droga e rock'n'roll non mancano in questo classico degli Stones.

La canzone è quasi totalmente opera di Jagger, curiosamente anche il famosissimo riff della chitarra che molti considerano da manuale nello stile di Richards. Il pezzo è nello stile di Freddy Cannon e parte dalla storia di una donna che ha un rapporto sessuale con uno dei propri servitori neri, poi ci sono i riferimentii allo schiavismo, alla prostituzione e allla droga. A me sembra che Jagger non canti "Scarred old slaver" ("Vecchio negriero sfregiato") come riporta il testo, ma "Skydog slaver".

Lo sanno tutti che questa canzone parla dello zucchero di canna equo e solidale, codroipo!
Il quale, attualmente, per quel che mi riguarda è ben più pericoloso della droga.
Aspetto che Mick Jagger componga una canzone sulla stevia. L'avrà mai provata assieme alle grazie di Marsha Hunt?

Ovviamente questa Marsha Hunt. L'altra, a parte che aveva più di cinquant'anni quando è stata scritta la canzone, è bianca bianca... ma è ancora viva, e ha più di cento anni.
Suggerirei di spostare “Brown Sugar” fra gli Extra, per un paio di ragioni.
Prima di tutto, non credo proprio che scrivendola Mick Jagger avvesse un’intenzione di denuncia contro lo schiavismo, di cui comunque la canzone parla. Più semplicemente si tratta di un testo molto improvvisato, a tema sessuale piuttosto spinto e oltraggioso che lo stesso autore, in tempi più recenti, ha detto non riscriverebbe.
In secondo luogo, il dubbio espresso da Flavio Poltronieri, rispetto a “Skydog slaver” al posto di “Scarred old slaver” ha un suo fondamento. Ne parla Keith Richards nel suo “Life”, citando un ricordo di Jim Dickinson, musicista e produttore presso i Muscle Shoals Studios in Alabama, dove nel dicembre del 1969 i Rolling Stones registrarono “Brown Sugar”. Registrato in Francia nel 1974 assieme ai Quilapayún, che vi si trovavano in esilio dopo il golpe dell'11 settembre 1973, O povo unido jamais será vencido di Luís Cília è, al tempo stesso, un adattamento abbastanza fedele dell'originale e una canzone portoghese di lotta. L'anno, il 1974, non è certo casuale. L'incisione diede luogo a un singolo che, sul lato B, conteneva Uma palavra antiga; nel Povo unido portoghese formano il coro Carlos Vaz, Helena Malho, Nina e António Jotta (la copertina del disco fu realizzata da Maria Judith Cília, la moglie di Luís). Inutile dire che, dopo il 25 aprile 1974, la canzone ebbe un ruolo importante nell'irripetibile periodo susseguito alla Revolução dos Cravos e che durò in Portogallo fino a tutto il 1975. [RV]
