Come faceva notare a suo tempo Gustavo nella quarta strofa (quella del 1865) almeno nelle versioni disponibili nei video Judy Collins canta "now the fightin' is over" and non "come to the window". Ho corretto il testo di conseguenza.

Volendo essere pignoli, non è corretto dire che le strofe non cantate da Loreena McKennitt siano quelle in corsivo, in quanto lei conclude la canzone con quella che è la penultima strofa, anche se in verità essa ricalca quasi completamente la prima. Omette solo l'ultima che a sua volta è la ripetizione della terza, con una sola variazione del tempo dei verbi bussare e fischiare. E' curioso invece il fatto che tutti omettano la responsabilità dello stalliere spione Tim.

Chanson allemande – Die Ballade vom Nachahmungstrieb – Erich Kästner – 1931
Chanson écrite par Erich Kästner et publiée le 24 mars 1931 dans l’hebdomadaire Die Weltbühne, dirigé par Kurt Tucholsky en 1926 et 1927, et puis, par son ami Carl von Ossietzky jusqu’à son arrestation en 1933.
Les nazis arrêtèrent Carl von Ossietzky, avec des milliers d’opposants au lendemain du pseudo- « incendie du Reichstag ». Ce fut alors qu’ils commencèrent à jouer, à s’amuser sadiquement avec toutes ces vies réduites en captivité, vraiment comme le font les protagonistes de cette « Ballade de l’imitation » ; un groupe d’enfants, curieux de savoir ce qu’éprouvent les grands lorsqu’ils exécutent un criminel, décident de pendre par jeu l’un d’eux, Fritz Naumann, après l’avoir sommairement poursuivi en justice comme voleur… Lorsque un adulte s’aperçoit que le jeu s’est changé en tragédie, il est alors trop tard…...
