On iki yaşına geldiğinde... (Continues)

Gerhard Schöne, born 1952 near Dresden, has been one of former DDR's best known folksingers, although he was considered as a “critical voice”. It should be borne in mind that Violeta Parra was a celebrity in the German Democratic Republic: not only did she perform, but also she recorded a whole album... (Continues)
[RV]
Manfred Maurenbrecher's family name may evoke much to a German: it means “wall breaker”, and that's why we can see him there with an axe in his hands. While referring to the official website for further information, we can say here that Manfred Maurenbrecher's Nachdichtung of Gracias a la vida is the youngest in time among the German versions: written 2003, it was issued 2004 in the album Ende der Nacht (“End of Night”, a definitely célinian title). I don't have any new language versions to post. Instead, I would like to submit the audio link to a version of this song which to me is the most precious one. It's the interpretation of the song by Omara Portuondo and Martin Rojas from their 1974 album »Omara Portuondo & Martin Rojas« which, by the way, was recorded in Finland.
I have heard this version thousands of times, but I have to admit that her warm, profound voice and his amazig guitar playing still make me shiver. So I hope you enjoy it too.

Dear Juha, you may be well the one who...flashed the ignition spark for updating this important page (one of the oldest ones in our website). When I first updated the videos of the Finnish versions according to your indication, I noticed the page needed to be brushed up, and this was no easy task. I think this song has been translated into many other languages, but we never give up searching (and translating directly, if need be). Thank you so much for your contributions, and -of course- to DonQuijote 82, who found versions and translations from the Far East.
A complete Basque translation of Gracias a la vida must have been unavailable until October 7, 2009, when the task has been fulfilled by a List for Basque Translators to which we owe this precious document. The author of the translation is Asier Larrinaga Larrazabal, who must have made no ordinary translation (as it can be seen from the song's title that doesn't sound in Basque “Thanks to life”, but “I live my life”).

(Continues)
