They Were All Out of Step but Jim

They Were All Out of Step but Jim
[1918]
Lyrics & Music by Irving Berlin
Album: Songs of the Great War by Irving Berlin

The second great memorable song to come from Berlin during the War was this one, another novelty work that shows him at his best.
The first recording of this song was done by Billy Murray. The rendition here is a duet between myself and guest artist Peggy Wooden of Anderson, Missouri and is based on a rendition done in 1918 by Gus Van and Joe Schenck. Starting out as a private and eventually making it to Sergeant, Berlin certainly was wise to the ways of the front line soldier. Though he admitted he was not much of a soldier and that it was not his trade, Berlin served well and learned the basics in addition to helping morale of the troops and the folks at home.
Certainly, a joke that has existed since soldiers started marching (such as this group at Camp Upton in 1917) was the idea that when a... (Continues)

Cappuccetto Nero

Cappuccetto Nero
[1972]
Dall’album d’esordio “Ugolino”

Troppo originale, troppo avanti, troppo amaro, troppo sarcastico... troppo scomodo.
Guarda quella palla

Kitchen Police (Poor Little Me)

Kitchen Police (Poor Little Me)
[1918]
Lyrics & Music by Irving Berlin
Album: Songs of the Great War by Irving Berlin

Copyrighted September 19, 1918. Introduced as “Poor Little Me” in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1918. Sung by sergeant Irving Berlin and chorus in Yip, Yip, Yaphank.
The songs is a bit of an enigma for us as finding a copy with a cover image has proven to be an endless quest. Even searching library collections as far away as the Australian National Library has left us empty handed. Aside from its connection to Yip, Yip, there seems to be little information available to tell us more about the song. Therefore, we shall let the song's lyrics speak for themselves.
The lament of the soldier assigned to KP (Kitchen helper, usually perceived as punishment) has been the source of a great deal of military humor.
Once again, it was Irving Berlin who first introduced us to the misery of K.P...

It Ain't Me Babe

It Ain't Me Babe

Nailing Descartes to the Wall / (Liquid) Meat Is Still Murder

Nailing Descartes to the Wall / (Liquid) Meat Is Still Murder
I speak outside what is recognized as the border between “reason” and “insanity”. But I consider it a measure of my humanity to be written off by the living graves of a billion murdered lives. And I’m not ashamed of my recurring dreams about me and a gun and a different species (hint: starts with “h” and rhymes with “Neuman’s”) of carnage strewn about the stockyards, the factories and farms. Still I know as well as anyone that it does less good than harm to be this honest with a conscience eased by lies. But you cannot deny that meat is still murder. Dairy is still rape. And I’m still as stupid as anyone, but I know my mistakes. I have recognized one form of oppression, now I recognize the rest. And life’s too short to make another’s shorter-(animal liberation now!).

Rosa

Rosa
[2008]
Lyrics & Music by Olgostin
Album: The Story of History

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea. But killing a man, you kill a man. And this is something horrible, which words cannot describe. No, words cannot describe...

On January 15, 1919 Rosa Luxemburg
and Karl Liebknecht were captured by the Freikorps Garde-Kavallerie-Schützendivision.
Rosa Luxemburg was rifle-butted, then shot in the head, and her body was thrown into Berlin's Landwehr Canal. Karl Liebknecht was shot in the Tiergarten and his "anonymous" body was brought to a mortuary.
The German revolution was in this way terminated..
More than four months after the murders, on 1 June 1919, Rosa Luxemburg's corpse was found and identified after an autopsy at the Berlin Charité hospital..
You were rifle-butted
