Sono dieci anni Joe Strummer che ci ha lasciato. Lo vogliamo ricordare oggi con questa bella canzone dall'album che lo riportò, con il suo nuovo gruppo - i Mescaleros - a calcare i palchi di tutto il mondo con nuove canzoni degne dei migliori Clash.

È una canzone sulla libertà, un tributo alla gente comune, alla classe operaia. Johnny Appleseed (Giovanni Semedimela) fu un pionere e religioso protoambientalista statunitense, famoso per aver piantato migliaia di meli, visto come simbolo dell'altruismo.

"Se hai bisogno del miele, ehi, allora non ammazzi tutte le api". Le api sono il simbolo della classe operaia, quella che produce la ricchezza e che troppo spesso non solo non ne può godere i frutti, ma viene sistematicamente repressa e ammazzata.

A due anni dalla caduta della dittatura, i lavoratori greci avevano assai da recuperare. Dovevano in primo luogo riappropriarsi, per l'ennesima volta nella sua storia, del principale sindacato, la Confederazione Generale dei Lavoratori Greci, la ΓΣΕΕ, che, fondata nel 1918, troppe volte era stata colonizzata e istituzionalizzata dai liberali di Venizelos, dal dittatore fascista Metaxas, dagli occupanti tedeschi, dagli agenti "sindacalisti" britannici, da quelli americani, e infine dai Giuntisti, che resitettero a lungo nei posti chiave anche dopo la caduta dei loro amati colonnelli.

"I went to sleep at midnite, still hoping there would be a stay of execution, but when I woke up, Stanley "Tookie" Williams was dead-murdered by the state of California...I was so disgusted and sad and angry, and I wrote this song. I want to give a shout out to Dave Longstreth of the Dirty Projectors who was staying at my house with his brother my bandmate and roommate at the time, Jake Longstreth (a fine artist-look for his website), and Dave sat in on a band practice, and I liked his take on the song so much it made it into my final arrangement (with the other addition of a bit of Gnawa clapping thanks to Dr. Tim Abdellah Fuson, PhD in Gnawa). Gracias, muchachos."
