Testo trovato sull'articolo di Les Cleveland dello Smithsonian Institution "Soldiers' Songs: The Folklore of the Powerless" pubblicato sulla rivista "New York Folklore" n.11 nel 1985.
"The Soldier's Prayer" has been a traditional part of the repertoire of the rank and-file British soldier for at least 100 years. Although it contains blasphemous sentiment it is essentially an appeal for deliverance from over-bearing and hated authority. The combined-operations basis involving a soldier and a sailor, and the abusive reference to "our Queen" suggest Victorian origins, perhaps during the Crimea campaign.”

It was adapted and popularized commercially by singers like Gracie Fields under the bowdlerized title of "Bless 'em All" so that in its officially sponsored form it functioned as a patriotic item of light entertainment. Le “chain gang”, le squadre di detenuti condannati ai lavori forzati e costretti insieme alla catena, furono di fatto l’escamotage legale con cui negli USA continuò a perpetrarsi lo schiavismo anche dopo la sua abolizione. Coloro che venivano condannati ai lavori forzati nelle “chain gang” erano quasi sempre afroamericani o bianchi di estrazione molto umile…
Il sistema funzionò fino al 1955 e, in alcuni Stati, come la Georgia, fino ai primi anni 60… Negli anni 90 venne sperimentalmente reintrodotto in alcuni Stati, ma senza successo.
Nel 1932 fece scalpore il libro intitolato “I Am a Fugitive from a Georgia Chain Gang” scritto da Robert Elliott Burns, un veterano della prima guerra mondiale, poi diventato giornalista ed editore, il quale, a causa di una terribile... (Continues)

Voglio salutare la bellissima canzone n. 9999 e la splendida non-canzone n.10000, tutti i collaboratori di questo magnifico sito e anche gli ineffabili Admins, pure se perfidi, con un paio di contributi.
Questo è il secondo.

L’“auction block” era il luogo del mercato dove gli schiavi neri venivano battuti all’asta… la “merce” veniva fatta salire su di un masso, o un palco in pietra o legno, perché potesse essere visionata meglio dai possibili acquirenti…

“En tiempos de ignominia”, scritta nel 1994, è stata pubblicata solo dopo la morte del grande scrittore e poeta spagnolo (Barcellona, 1928 - 1999) nell’omaggio intitolato “Goytisolo - Veintisiete voces para un único poema, veintisiete miradas para un mismo rostro” (1999).

Il regista è Kevin Macdonald, quello di “Un giorno a settembre” (sul sequestro della delegazione israeliana da parte di un commando palestinese alle Olimpiadi di Monaco del 1972) e di “L’ultimo re di Scozia” (sul sanguinario dittatore ugandese Idi Amin Dada).
Il film di cui voglio parlarvi è del 2007 e si intitola “My Enemy's Enemy”, da noi “Il nemico del mio nemico - Cia, nazisti e guerra fredda”, e racconta la storia di Klaus Barbie.
Klaus Barbie (Bad Godesberg, Germania, 1913 –Lione, Francia, 1991), conosciuto come il “Boia di Lione”, fu il capo della Gestapo nella città francese durante l’occupazione nazista. "Steve Earle has a song entitled Rich Man's War. This isn't it. Steve's song is a wonderful ballad. This is a protest song intended for people to get excited about. It worked. I also hoped people would sing it so I wrote it to be a folk song. That's a song the folk can sing and play. Well, you decide if it's that.
The truth is that this song started out as a poem. It was been published as a part of the Poets Against the War Anthology and subsequently by the Indie Journal, the Web Poetry Corner, and others.
The editor of the Indie Journal called me a communist but published the poem and a related article anyway. We subsequently became good friends and I have contributed much poetry and many articles to their effort."

Je pense bien, Lucien l'âne mon ami si fièrement campé sur tes quatre pieds, que tu connais Boris Vian et sa chanson du déserteur dans laquelle il annonce son intention de déserter et d'aller par les chemins inciter les gens à faire de même. Tu sais bien cette chanson sous la forme d'une lettre et qui commence par « Monsieur le Président... ».
Oui, bien sûr, Marco Valdo M.I. mon ami très cher, comment pourrait-il en être autrement, moi qui suis un âne et par conséquent, depuis la plus haute antiquité, un déserteur en puissance. Sauf quand l'homme était un ami, nous avons toujours, nous les ânes, voulu échapper à toute contrainte et spécialement, à celle du travail obligatoire et bien entendu, à toute forme d'engagement guerrier. Une de nos manies était de nous enfuir dès que possible et spécialement, dès qu'il s'agissait de se battre.... (Continues)
