Interpretata anche dal Kingston Trio e riproposta nel 1963 con un testo diverso dal country singer e songwriter Bobby Bare.

Insieme a "Fred Karno's Army", un’altra assai poco eroica caricatura della vita militare. Diffusa tra le truppe britanniche e del Commonwealth durante il secondo conflitto mondiale.
La canzone, in una versione dal testo pressoché identicoa, si intitola "the Skinback Fusiliers" con riferimento alle frequenti ispezioni intime, spesso degradanti, (note come “short arm inspections” o “dangle parades”) che i soldati dovevano subire sia a causa della grande diffusione di malattie veneree sia perché l’essere umiliati di fronte a tutti, il dover mostrare e farsi manipolare, o doversi manipolare in pubblico i genitali è una pratica tipicamente militare per piegare l’individuo all’accettazione del gruppo e dell’istituzione... "Fred Karno's Army" was sung to the tune of "The Church's One Foundation" by British and Commonwealth troops in both world wars. Karno was an English music hall comedian during World War 1 who specialized in the portrayal of comic inefficiency. In World War 2 versions, the Kaiser is replaced by "Old Hitler"

Although it contains blasphemous sentiment it is essentially an appeal for deliverance from over-bearing and hated authority. The combined-operations basis involving a soldier and a sailor, and the abusive reference to "our Queen" suggest Victorian origins, perhaps during the Crimea campaign.”

Le “chain gang”, le squadre di detenuti condannati ai lavori forzati e costretti insieme alla catena, furono di fatto l’escamotage legale con cui negli USA continuò a perpetrarsi lo schiavismo anche dopo la sua abolizione. Coloro che venivano condannati ai lavori forzati nelle “chain gang” erano quasi sempre afroamericani o bianchi di estrazione molto umile…
Il sistema funzionò fino al 1955 e, in alcuni Stati, come la Georgia, fino ai primi anni 60… Negli anni 90 venne sperimentalmente reintrodotto in alcuni Stati, ma senza successo.

Voglio salutare la bellissima canzone n. 9999 e la splendida non-canzone n.10000, tutti i collaboratori di questo magnifico sito e anche gli ineffabili Admins, pure se perfidi, con un paio di contributi.

“En tiempos de ignominia”, scritta nel 1994, è stata pubblicata solo dopo la morte del grande scrittore e poeta spagnolo (Barcellona, 1928 - 1999) nell’omaggio intitolato “Goytisolo - Veintisiete voces para un único poema, veintisiete miradas para un mismo rostro” (1999).

"Ciao Alessandro, scusa se ti rispondo con un pò di ritardo. Considero quello che mi hai mandato un gradito regalo.
Quello che penso su tutto ciò occuperebbe troppo spazio e troppo tempo per dirlo con una certa compiutezza.
Sono sicuramente antimilitarista mentre ho sempre avuto dei dubbi sul pacifista, pur considerandolo un alto e nobile ideale... Vorrei che nessuno mai dovesse essere stato costretto a trasformare un attrezzo da lavoro in un arma, invece a qualcuno è toccato...
E questo mondo continua a sfornare soprusi tali da rendere facile vedere... (Continues)
