La canzone è dedicata alle frequenti "morti sotto custodia" di cui sono vittime in Australia gli aborigeni per mano delle forze di polizia. Nemmeno un anno dopo l'uscita dell'album in cui è contenuto questo brano, una squadra speciale della polizia di Sidney uccise a sangue freddo, durante un'irruzione illegale, un giovane aborigeno di nome David Gundy. Da quel momento Hulett ha sempre dedicato a David Gundy la canzone quando la esegue dal vivo.

Infatti José Antonio Labordeta, oltre ad essere scrittore, poeta, cantautore e musicista, è stato a lungo deputato per Izquierda Unida e per la Chunta Aragonesista e ha sempre rotto parecchio le palle, essendo stato sempre un acerrimo oppositore alla guerra e nemico dei suoi fautori... celebri i suoi violenti attacchi in Parlamento ai popolari di Aznar e Rajoy, accesi interventi che immancabilmente Labordeta concludeva con l'escalamazione "A la mierda!"... Dichiarò anche che quella avrebbe dovuto essere l'epigrafe sulla sua lapide...

Scritta in occasione dei 70 anni dal cosiddetto "Centralia Massacre"

Questa canzone è dedicata a Wesley Everest (1890-1919), un boscaiolo dell'Oregon, veterano della prima guerra mondiale e attivista del sindacato Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).
L'11 novembre 1919, a Centralia (Washington), durante le celebrazioni per il giorno dell'armistizio, membri della American Legion, un'associazione di veterani invasati e fascistoidi, attaccò la locale camera del lavoro, sede dell'IWW, dei "Reds". Wesley Everest e i suoi compagni si difesero e durante gli scontri 4 aggressori rimasero uccisi. Pare che Everest li avesse avvertiti dicendo loro: "I fought for democracy in France and I'm going to fight for it here. The first man that comes in this hall, why, he's going to get it."
Everest fu arrestato per l'omicidio di due dei 4 uomini uccisi.

Nell’emigrazione bergamasca e bresciana è fortissima la presenza di bergamaschi e bresciani nelle miniere o nei lavori di traforo e galleria delle Alpi, questo sia perché c’era un esubero di mano d’opera, sia perché in queste due province c’era già una tradizione della miniera per la presenza di minerali sfruttati già nell’antichità e quindi operai già esperti.
La vita in miniera è durissima, con situazioni ancora più dure rispetto ai secoli precedenti, quando il minerale veniva cavato stagionalmente , e c’era quindi la possibilità di scegliere i momenti migliori anche dal punto di vista climatico e ambientale.
Il traforo delle alpi doveva esser fatto rispettando dei tempi, e quindi si procedeva a turni continuati... (Continues)

Tra il 1872 e il 1882 venne costruita la Galleria ferroviaria del San Gottardo, che collega il Canton Ticino con il Canton Uri.
Le condizioni di lavoro e di vita degli operai, moltissimi dei quali italiani, erano a dir poco terribili. Quasi 200 di loro morirono per incidenti o per la cosiddetta "anemia del Gottardo”, una parassitosi dovuta alle pessime condizioni igieniche.
Responsabile del cantiere era l'ingegnere svizzero Louis Favre che, per risparmiare sui costi, non aveva installato nè un adeguato impianto di aerazione delle gallerie, nè servizi igienici sufficienti, nè alloggiamenti appropriati per i lavoratori e le loro famiglie e nemmeno un servizio efficiente di approvvigionamento di acqua e viveri. Con l'espressione "Red Clydeside" viene indicato un periodo di grande fermento rivoluzionario che in Scozia investì Glasgow e altre aree urbane in prossimità del River Clyde tra il 1910 e i primi anni '30.
Personaggi come Willie Gallacher, John Maclean (vedi The John MacLean March e Ballad Of John MacLean), James Maxton, Mary Barbour e gli altri citati nel brano furono i leader di un non breve periodo di lotte contro la guerra, per il diritto alla casa, per migliori condizioni di lavoro. Il Red Clydeside ebbe il suo episodio più cruento il 31 gennaio 1919 quando polizia ed esercito tentarono di porre fine ad uno sciopero di massa. Negli scontri in George Square, nel centro di Galsgow, i manifestanti ebbero la meglio sulle forze dell'ordine, armate fino ai denti ma impreparate. I settlers (coloni) e gli swaggies (i precari delle braccia) immigrati (o deportati, che sovente si trattava di criminali comuni) dalla Gran Bretagna facevano spesso una vita di merda, rompendosi la schiena nei campi o perdendo la vita nelle varie guerre bandite dalla Corona...

A sua volta, la "nuova Australia" stritolò senza pietà "Koorie", la "vecchia Australia" aborigena...

Il titolo fa ovviamente riferimento alla più famosa tra le ballate popolari australiane, Waltzing Matilda.
