Ballad Of Denshaw Mill

Ballad Of Denshaw Mill
Album: Caught In The Light (1993)

Written by John Lees, this song is based on a Saddleworth legend which has its basis in fact. Denshaw Mill was a woollen mill which operated until the late 1880s, and was already derelict by the time of the first war, when the events described in the song took place. The line "a hole as rotten as ever fouled the green earth" is from a verse by local poet Ammon Wrigley, and the area is part of the Friarmere division of Saddleworth, known locally as the Darkside. Album: "Lorenzo '94"

Three-Five-Zero-Zero

Three-Five-Zero-Zero
Pacifism pervades the book and score. The theme of opposition to the war is unified by the plot thread that progresses consistently through the book – Claude's moral dilemma over whether to burn his draft card. This theme is most intensely explored in the extended trip sequence in Act 2. The lyrics to "Three-Five-Zero-Zero", which is sung during that sequence, evoke the horrors of war ("ripped open by metal explosion") and point a finger at the Vietnam War directly when the tribe sing "256 Vietcong captured".

The song is based on Allen Ginsberg's 1966 poem, "Wichita Vortex Sutra". In the poem, General Maxwell Taylor proudly reports to the press the number of enemy soldiers killed in one month, repeating it digit by digit, for effect: "Three-Five-Zero-Zero." The song starts begins with images of death and dying and turns into a manic dance number, ironically celebrating the killing in an... (Continues)

From Ozark Folksongs
Collected by Mr. Tandy Collins, 1927
Randolph/Vance, Ozark Folksongs. Volume IV, Religious Songs and Others, p148/#696A [1927/07/26]

First recording: G.B. Grayson - Henry Whitter, 1927
Prima incisione: G.B. Grayson - Henry Whitter, 1927

I Don't Like Mondays

I Don't Like Mondays
Bob Geldof wrote this song when he heard about the San Diego elementary school massacre.
In January 1979, Brenda Spencer , a troubled 16-year-old who lived across the street from a schoolyard in San Diego, took the semi-automatic rifle her father had given her for Christmas and began firing. Four people died and eight children were injured. When asked why she did it, she answered "I just don't like Mondays".

"I don't care what your politics are, when
our children are dying in the streets, it's time to put away the guns." Stan Rogers

The House of Orange is a Stan Rogers song about The Troubles, in particular about fundraising for the combatants in Canada. The overall sentiment of the song is "a pox on both your houses". The 'House of Orange' mentioned in the song is the royal house of William III of England, who led the Protestant side of the Williamite war in Ireland. It is on his posthumous CD From Fresh Water. This is the last song written by Stan Rogers before his death, and arguably among his most lyrically evocative

Each Small Candle

Each Small Candle
Album: In The Flesh - Live 2000

The first stanza is a poem written for Danish Amnesty International by Halfdan Rasmussen. The lyrics of the rest of the song are Roger's response to a newspaper article about the story of a Serbian soldier who helped an Albanian woman lying wounded in a burned-out building.

Halfdan Rasmussen (January 29, 1915 in Copenhagen – March 2, 2002) was a Danish poet. He was known for his nonsensical children's verse and his serious adult writings about social issues and human rights.
Rasmussen was a resistance fighter during the German occupation He became very well known and respected as a poet, nearly becoming a national poet of Denmark. One of his poems, Ikke Bødlen, was featured as one of the best poems on Human Rights on a 1979 book published by Amnesty International Denmark, and would be later translated into the first verse of Roger Waters' song Each Small...

(Continues)

A song about the Christmas Truce of 1914 during the World War I when British and French troops ceased hostilities on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Christmas Truce Letter

A brief part of a 10 page letter written by an unknown British soldier that records events and incidents with the Germans on December 24, 1914.

This will be the most memorable Christmas I've ever spent or likely to spend: since about tea time yesterday I don't think theres been a shot fired on either side up to now. Last night turned a very clear frost moonlight night, so soon after dusk we had some decent fires going and had a few carols and songs. The Germans commenced by placing lights all along the edge of their trenches and coming over to us—wishing us a Happy Christmas etc. They also gave us a few songs etc. so we had quite a social party. Behind The Crooked Cross

Behind The Crooked Cross
Music and Lyrics by Jeff Hanneman
Testo e Musica di Jeff Hanneman
Letra y Musica de Jeff Hanneman
Album: South Of Heaven (1988)

Ballad Of Richard Campos

Ballad Of Richard Campos
Parole e musica di Luis e Danny Valdez.
Interpretata da Barbara Dane nel disco “F.T.A.! Songs et the GI Resistance”, Paredon Records 1970.

“This is one of two existing versions of this idea, both written by brothers.
Luis Valdez is the director of the Teatro Campesino, a marvelous people's theatre which came out of the California grape strike. His brother Danny was a young musician trying to make it in the big city, who quit and joined the Teatro when he saw how important this cultural extension of the strike could be to his people.
Danny wrote this song and then Luis wrote another of the same theme in Spanish, to show how empty the idea of "making it" in the Army or in any phase of present-day American life today could be. They wanted to address the "rnachismo" concepts in Latin culture too and put to rest the idea that the only way you could be a man, please your woman, or honor your... (Continues)

Però...però non so, mi suona stonato mettere una canzone come "Bogside Volunteers" in un sito che si chiama ANTIWAR SONGS che proclama "Antiwar songs is a collection of pacifist and antimilitarist songs from all over the world and of any time, based on free contributions by readers and collaborators. This is why we have chosen a Database form for this website.".

The police were firing tear gas shells they scattered all around
They said they had sufficient men to beat us to the ground
But we replied with petrol bombs and filled their hearts with fear

Holy Mountains

Holy Mountains
Album: Hipnotize (2005)

A song against the Armenian genocide.

t’s important for people to be aware of the atrocities inflicted on the Armenian people by the Ottoman Empire during World War I, and that those actions continue to be covered up by the Turkish government, the U.S. State Department, the U.S. Administration, and Turkey’s allies in the defense and oil industries. The Armenian genocide happened, it was very real to the 1.5 million Armenians who were murdered or deported from their homeland. Had the Armenian genocide been deemed a crime against humanity in the books after World War I, Hitler might not have thought he could get away with the Jewish holocaust.

Dle yaman
Armenian folksong preserved by Komitas Vardapet.

(Continues)

Armenians

Armenians
A song based on the poem Armentsi, wrote by Peyo Yavorov, which expresses the heart-felt surrow for Armenian suffering.

ARMENIANS

Wretched exiles, rare survivors
Of a brave and martyr race
Children of a captive mother
Heroes with no resting place.
Far from home in squalid hovels
Sick and pale from lack of sleep.
See them drink to drown their sorrows
Hear them sing and, singing, weep!
Drink...
For drunkeness erases
Former troubles, present woes
Bitter memories effaces
Gives a broken heart repose.
Heads grow heavier,a mother's
Look of anguish disappears
And a son's appeal is smothered
For the mind no longer hears.
By a wolf-pack harried, frightened
See them scatter everywhere
As the ruthless, bloody tyrant
Waves his sabre in the air!
They have left their country bleeding
And paternal homes ablaze.
Only taverns offer welcome
To these wretched emigres.
Here they sing...

Ahmed l'ambulante

Ahmed l'ambulante
