A second version of the song was recorded later that year by pianist Les McCann and saxophonist Eddie Harris for their album, Swiss Movement, recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival. The McCann and Harris version became an international hit, selling over a million copies. At a time when black folks, American youth, and anti-war protesters were literally taking it to the streets, "Compared to What" was a scathing critique of social realities in the United States, taking aim at the clergy, "poor dumb rednecks," "tired old ladies," and the Vietnam War. McDaniels' lyrics were clear: even to raise questions about the war in Vietnam was considered an act of treason. McDaniels' observation, of course, resonates... (Continues)

E noi che crediamo nella pace pensiamo che il più nobile impegno sia quello di convincere ogni persona al mondo a vederla nello stesso modo. Ma non tutti accettano questa visione. Il popolo del mondo è come due tribù nel deserto, una tribù vive in un paese con un pozzo, l'altra in un paese senza pozzo. La tribù con il pozzo vuole la pace, l'altra non vuole la pace, vuole l'acqua! La tribù senza pozzo forse è meno civilizzata, non ha una parola per dire pace, ma ne ha una per dire sete che, data la situazione, è più o meno la stessa cosa. BENVENUTI A ORGOSOLO
L'amico Massimo ci fa pervenire questa foto. Si tratta del cartello stradale all'ingresso di Orgosolo, ai giorni nostri. Ad ognuno interpretarlo come meglio crede. Una sola cosa è certa: con gli orgolesi e con i fierissimi barbaricini non si scherza. Se ne accorsero le autorità militari italiane a Pratobello nel 1969.

A parte essere una canzone ricca di sonorità interessanti e bellissima io personalmente non la considero una canzone contro la guerra, la citazione del 21 è solo una citazione appunto, che poi se vogliamo potrebbe essere anche 2921 e non 3021 visto che nel 3039 le persone vivono 200 anni :-)))

Con la mente ai fatti di Cana in Libano, ho tradotto questa canzone, scritta da Noa sulla musica di Bach/Gounod, mentre la ascoltavo dal Live in Israel che lei ha inciso con il Solis Quartet di Napoli…(la traduzione non è perfettamente letterale ma ho cercato di mantenere anche il senso metrico)

Vede la luce la versione suonata sul palco di Wembley, Londra, durante il concerto per la liberazione del leader sudafricano Nelson Mandela (11 giugno). "Capimmo, probabilmente male, che ogni band avrebbe dovuto scrivere una canzone appositamente per l’evento. Fummo gli unici a farlo. Ci dicemmo: se questi problemi ci stanno veramente a cuore, dovremmo essere in grado di scriverci su qualcosa". Quando i Minds fecero il "grande patto col diavolo" (parole di Kerr) per diventare famosi, giurarono che avrebbero usato la loro popolarità per combattere le battaglie giuste. A plea for love and peace similar to those recorded by Sly & the Family Stone in the late 1960s, the lyrics of "Stoned Love" were a plea for the people of the world to end conflict and animosity between each other, specifically the Vietnam War. Thomas chose the term "stoned love" (or alternately, "stone love") to define the concept of an unchanging bond between one another.

From the album "Sessant'anni di Resistenza" ("Sixty years of Resistance")
Santi Piperni and Salvatore Vecchioni were partisans in the same group. Having heard about the threat of fire and violence on their houses by the side of the German army and of the fascists, they decided to go back to their town, Partina (Comune di Bibbiena). The morning of the 13th, at dawn, the Germans located Salvatore's house and, catched his mother and his brother as hostage, they shot and set fire to his house where he was barred. Santi went to help his friend, throwing an hand grenade, shooting on the Germans, calling attention to himself, giving Santi the time to break through the roof, jump out and run away in the countries, bloody and hurted.
Santi ran away as well, but he was struck down and killed. With his help, however, he determined the safety of his fellow Salvatore, who lives in Soci today and who continues in telling this history.The 13th of April 29 peoplewere killed; the 12th of April 7 youths were killed by gun in Moscaio.
