Luang Prabang si trova nel Laos e fu l’epicentro della cosiddetta “guerra segreta”, il teatro delle operazioni sotto copertura realizzate prima dai francesi e poi dagli americani durante la guerra d’Indocina, la guerra del Vietnam.

Dopo molti anni, grazie a un commento di Bernart Bartleby che ha riaperto questa vecchia pagina del 14 gennaio 2006 (appartiene ancora a quelle dello “sgabuzzino di Friburgo”, per intendersi), si è deciso di vedere se, per caso, in Rete adesso fosse presente il testo originale. Se n'è riuscito a trovare soltanto alcuni lacerti, disiecta membra per dirla nello stile del “Nome della Rosa”, da questa pagina, dalla quale è stato evinto anche il reale titolo della doina: Doina Haşului, ovvero “Doina della H” (haş è il nome rumeno della lettera H). Per il resto sembra essersi dissolta, e le ragioni sono ovvie: ai rumeni non fa nessun piacere, in generale, ricordare canti e qualsiasi cosa sia legato al regime comunista, e lo si può capire. Ancora un canto rivoluzionario ispirato alla repressione del movimento degli scioperi rivoluzionari del 1934 nelle Asturie, ad opera delle truppe del generale Francisco Franco. Il canto è sull'aria de La bella Lola. Soltanto il titolo è in dialetto asturiano (significa: "Strofe fatte passare dalle finestre del carcere modello di Oviedo dai prigionieri del '34"); il testo è in castigliano. Lo riprendo da questa pagina.

Canto galiziano, in lingua galega, risalente probabilmente agli anni '50 del XX secolo. Il testo è ripreso da "La musica dell'altra Italia", a sua volta riportato dai "Canti della resistenza spagnola", 1960-61, EP.

Roccaforte militare nei pressi di Anversa, Breendonck (propriamente Breendonk in lingua neerlandese) venne utilizzata fin dall'inizio dell'occupazione tedesca (maggio 1940) come campo di concentramento per i colpevoli di attività politiche contro l'invasore. Vi vennero internati anche gli ebrei, fino al 1942, quando fu aperto il campo di Malines, loro riservato.

Mentre i fascisti locali, capeggiati da Léon Degrelle da G. De Clercq, si misero immediatamente a disposizione dell'invasore tedesco e del governo collaborazionista di Von Falkenhausen, grazie anche all'estrema debolezza e all'indecisione della Corona, le forze migliori del paese organizzarono la resistenza... Un'altra antichissima pagina che viene ripresa a distanza di oltre sedici anni. Sedici anni fa, in questo sito che viveva ancora la sua prima adolescenza con tanto di brufoli, ci deve essere stata un'epidemia di canzoni russe, come il morbillo o la scarlattina (e, infatti, proprio all'epoca, in Svizzera, mi presi la varicella a quarant'anni sonati). Molte di queste pagine sono poi state lasciate del tutto abbandonate, e mi accorgo ora di quanto sia stato ingiusto. Prendiamo ad esempio questa canzone di Michail Šćerbakov (del 1987), ripresa nientepopodimeno che dal carme oraziano noto come Ad Leuconoen (Carmina I, XI); si tratta, per intendersi, del più celebre dei carmi di Orazio, quello in cui, nei versi finali, viene enunciato il Carpe diem. L'album Labudova pesma, uscito nel 1992 (cioè in piene guerre jugoslave), era l'undicesimo della rock band serba Riblja Čorba (che significa “Zuppa di pesce”) e doveva essere l'ultimo: da qui il titolo di “Canto del cigno”. La band e il suo discusso frontman, Bora Đorđević, tornarono poi sulla loro decisione. L'album fu registrato a Vienna alla fine del 1991 con la collaborazione del tastierista Oliver Mandić, un altro personaggio assai discusso: noto per apparire in scena travestito da donna (che aveva provocato scandalo nella ex Jugoslavia), doveva diventare proprio con questo album un membro ufficiale della band. Vi fu però un violento scontro tra Mandić e Đorđević, dovuto anche al differente atteggiamento dei due riguardo alla guerra in corso: Mandić, amico d'infanzia... (Continues)

Un bellissimo singolo del 1981.

Incredibilmente mai pubblicata in un album, è sicuramente un pezzo memorabile. I Clash riescono magnificamente a incorporare influenze dub, hip hop, e addirittura disco senza snaturare il loro sound.

La linea di basso è - per stessa ammissione di Strummer - "ispirata" da Another One Bites the Dust - il grande successo dei Queen pubblicato l'anno precedente.

Per quanto riguarda il testo siamo però completamente in territorio Clash - l'appello di una Radio Pirata per la lotta e per la libertà.

L'ultima canzone dell'ultimo disco di Fabrizio De André, Anime Salve (1996). Smisurata preghiera (ispirata dal "Gabbiere" di Alvaro Mutis) è invece secondo me non solo la somma dei percorsi del disco, ma anche di quelli della vita poetica di De Andrè. Fortissima la presenza di Mutis qui ripreso sia per la "Preghiera" di Maqroll, che al contrario recita "Ricorda Signore che il tuo servo ha osservato pazientemente le leggi del branco. Non dimenticare il suo volto", sia in più punti, a partire da quel "gli elementi del disastro" che ricorda appunto una delle raccolte più note del poeta. Ma De Andrè attraverso la poesia stavolta ci offre un vero, grande affresco a tinte forte della solitudine libera e scelta, presupposto necessario per "consegnare alla morte... (Continues)

Canzone legata alla vicenda di Sacco e Vanzetti, segnalataci dall'instancabile Alessandro, che la ricorda cantata dalla sua nonna paterna. Sembra che il testo non sia completo e manca il titolo (scegliamo quindi, secondo l'uso corrente, di utilizzare come titolo il primo verso).

Della canzone si parla in un articolo di Lele Odiardo su "Umanità Nova" (n. 28 dell'8 settembre 2002):

Aristophanes' anti-war comedy Lysistrata, written in 411 BC, has female characters, led by the eponymous Lysistrata, barricading the public funds building and withholding consensual sex from their husbands to secure peace and end the Peloponnesian War. In doing so, Lysistrata engages the support of women from Sparta, Boeotia, and Corinth. All of them are at first aghast at the suggestion of withholding sex, but they finally agree and swear an oath to support each other. The woman from Sparta, Lampito, returns home to spread the word there.

The play also addresses the contribution that women could make to society and to policy making, but cannot because their views are ignored: All such questions are considered... (Continues)

Halliburton Boardroom Massacre

Here are fifteen songs I wrote between January and July,
2005. I recorded them at Sugar Hill in Houston with John Griffin on the board on the afternoon of July 28th. I guess there's another bunch of songs here which are continuing the ecological theme that was heavily represented in Beyond the Mall (and to one degree or another in all of my other recordings). Some of the songs are definitely inspired by the musical sensibilies of TV Smith ("Crashing Down," "Boardroom," "Before the Oil Wells Run Dry," "Waiting For The Fall"). I don't know if any of these songs approach TV's brilliance at writing stuff with great universality to it, nor whether the melodies are as catchy as his, but in any case, his music has been a focus for my own songwriting over the past couple months.
