Im Röseligaarte z Mailand

Anonymous
[ca. 1914]

Lyrics and Music by Phil Ochs
Album: "Phil Ochs in Concert"
Pubblicato su Broadside #59 Giugno 1965

There has been some debate about whether the word is "cannons" or "canons". In the "War is Over" song book, the former is used throughout and as the title.

The Men Behind The Guns

The Men Behind The Guns
[1965]
Poesia di John Jerome Rooney [1866-1934]
Lyrics: Poem by John Jerome Rooney [1866-1934]
Musica di Phil Ochs
Music by Phil Ochs

LC has three holdings under "Rooney, John Jerome, 1866-1934." The _Collected Poems_, presumably including "Men Behind the Guns," was published in 1938: 137 pages of text, 21 of front matter, including "A glance at the life of John Jerome Rooney" (p. ix-xv). _Literary manuscripts, 1900-1934_ is summarised as "Autograph drafts (1900-1934) of the poems of John Jerome Rooney," and the biographical note says "Poet, jurist, and lawyer." Rare Book and Special Collections has what seems to be a pamphlet or handbill with "Men Behind the Guns," and the notes quote from the author's forward "First published in The New York sun (morning edition, May 18, 1898)".

21st Century Schizoid Man

21st Century Schizoid Man
(including Mirrors)

da "In The Court of The Crimson King" (1969)

Lyrics by Pete Sinfield
Music by Fripp/McDonald/Lake/Giles

(Continues)

The Thresher

The Thresher
[1964]
Testo e Musica di Phil Ochs
Lyrics and Music by Phil Ochs
Album: "All The News That's Fit To Sing"

"On the morning of April 10, 1963, the USS Thresher (SSN 593) proceeded to conduct sea trials about 200 miles off the coast of Cape Cod. At 9:13 a.m., the USS Skylark (a surface vessel assigned to assist Thresher) received a signal, via underwater telephone, indicating that the submarine was experiencing minor difficulties, have positive up-angle, attempting to blow.

Shortly afterward, the Skylark received a series of garbled, undecipherable message fragments from the Thresher. At 9:18 a.m., the Skylark’s sonar picked up the sounds of the submarine breaking apart. All 129 hands were lost -- 112 military and 17 civilian technicians.

One More Parade

One More Parade
[1962]
Testo e musica di Phil Ochs
Lyrics and Music by Phil Ochs
Da / From "All The News That's Fit To Sing"

"Pam Raver says: Phil wrote 'One More Parade' in Cleveland one night when he was emceeing a performance by the late Bob Gibson. He caught a guitar riff which he played for Gibson after the show and it became those decending bass notes that march through much of the song." Shortly after Phil Ochs' death, the folksinger Harry Chapin wrote the song The Parade's Still Passing By with exact reference to this song. Chapin died tragically 1981 in a car crash.

(Continues)

Bullets Of Mexico

Bullets Of Mexico
[1964]
Testo e musica di Phil Ochs
Lyrics and Music by Phil Ochs
Album: "All The News That's Fit To Sing"

seguente pagina (in spagnolo).

(Continues)

Galveston

Galveston
[1969]
Testo di / Lyrics by Jimmy Webb
Musica di / Music by Glen Campbell

This was written by songwriter Jimmy Webb, who also wrote Campbell's hits "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and "Wichita Lineman." Webb also wrote "MacArthur Park," which was a hit for both Richard Harris and Donna Summer, and "Up-Up and Away," which was recorded by The Fifth Dimension.
Galveston is a city on the coast of Texas that attracts lots of hurricanes. Webb was on a beach in Galveston when he wrote this. He made up the story about a soldier in the Spanish-American war and the girl he left behind.
The Vietnam War was going on when Campbell released this. It was considered an antiwar song.

Don't Come Crying to Me

Don't Come Crying to Me
[2004]
http://www.songaweek.com

"On the morning of Wednesday, 03 November 2004, we awoke to learn that George W. Bush had won re-election to the Whitehouse. To say that we felt dismay would be a serious understatement in that it truly felt like we had been kicked in the stomach by a mule.

The dishonesty, arrogance and unilateral heavy-handedness of the Bush administration during the first term convinced us that the next four years would be filled with more of the same - generating, on a world-wide basis, a frightening level of distrust and hatred for the USA. Domestically, we fear the continued efforts to strip away guaranteed civil liberties by the enshrinement of the USA Patriot Act.

This song expresses a sense of resignation to what a second term of Bush would yield...and a sense of frustration with those who voted for him. It seems preposterous that the very people who need social... (Continues)
