L'episodio raccontato in questa bella canzone di Reinhard Mey è purtroppo notissimo, anche per un recente film ad esso ispirato. Su di esso si veda anche Izieu di Claude Hazan.
Nel 1944 la Gestapo di Lione, agli ordini del criminale Klaus Barbie, mandò due camion nel villaggio di Izieu. La missione era quella di sterminare i bambini di un orfanotrofio conosciuto come "La Maison d'Izieu". In un raid assolutamente insensato, 44 bambini ebrei tra i 4 e i 13 anni e sette tutori adulti furono ammassati in un camion, inviati a Auschwitz e immediatamente gassati.
Sui fatti di Izieu si vedano i seguenti due siti:

Wenige Tage bevor in der Pariser "Junischlacht" (1848) Zehntausende aufständischer Arbeiter zusammengeschossen wurden, noch ehe dieses Ereignis den reaktionären Generälen Windischgraetz (Wien), Wrangel und Brandenburg (Berlin) Vorbild für ihre konterrevolutionären Aktivitäten wurde, verfaßte Ferdinand Freiligrath - der "Trompeter der Revolution" - sein Gedicht "Trotz alledem". Es wurde in der u.a. von Karl Marx herausgegebenen "Neuen Rheinischen Zeitung" abgedruckt und zu der aus dem 18. Jahrhundert stammenden schottischen Melodie "Lady Mackintosh's Reel" des schottischen Nationaldichters Robert Burns gesungen. Una delle più note canzoni del gruppo "Ton, Steine, Scherben", dal loro omonimo LP doppio del 1972.

La versione di Sigmar Mehring
Sigmar Mehring's version
1900
Sigmar Mehring (1856-1915) è, con tutta probabilità, il primo traduttore dell'Internazionale in lingua tedesca. Nato a Breslavia (l'attuale Wrocław, in Polonia) il 13 aprile 1856, era figlio di Siegfried Mehring, un celebre umorista dialettale di quell'epoca. Dopo aver completato gli studi commerciali, nel 1886 fondò una casa editrice ma, dal 1889, si trasferì a Berlino e visse come scrittore e giornalista. Nel 1899 fu incarcerato per tre mesi per avere scritto una poesia satirica contro i Gesuiti. A tutto ciò affiancò l'attività di traduttore dalla lingua francese, specializzandosi nella lirica del XIX secolo: fu così che, nel 1900, pubblicò un intero volume di traduzioni poetiche presso la casa editrice Baumert & Ronge di Grossenhain, Lipsia: Die französische Lyrik im 19. Pur essendo stata scritta da William Motherwell (il grande antiquario e giornalista scozzese che fu tra le principali fonti per Francis James Child con le sue raccolte di ballate tradizionali) nel 1822, The Wars O'Germany fu conosciuta soltanto nel 1862, quando fu inclusa da Robert Chambers in The Songs of Scotland Prior to Burns. La canzone sembra riandare al tempo della Guerra dei Sette Anni (che in realtà ne durò nove, dal 1754 al 1763), la quale vide le truppe britanniche impegnate perlopiù in territorio tedesco.
