Berliinin olympialaiset oli määrä pitää vuonna 1916, mutta ensimmäinen maailmasota siirsi ne aina vuoteen 1936, jolloin kansallissosialistit olivat olleet vallassa runsaat kolme vuotta. Hitler halusi saada kisoista mahdollisimman suuren propagandahyödyn. Tätä varten tarvittiin uusi uljas olympiapuisto ja sinne mahtipontinen stadion, jossa oli tilaa peräti 100 000 katsojalle. Stadionin tieltä purettiin vuoden 1916 peruuntuneita kisoja varten rakennettu Deutsches Stadion. Rakentaminen, joka työllisti enimmillään 2 600 ihmistä, aloitettiin vuonna 1934 ja saatiin päätökseen kaksi vuotta myöhemmin. Rakennustöihin saivat osallistua vain Saksan kansalaiset, jotka olivat arjalaista syntyperää.

This song, inspired by Riccardo Venturi's recent contribution, has little to do with antiwar themes and issues. Instead, its all about unconditional love, and if hatred is the fuel of war, love works exactly the opposite way. Therefore, I sincerely hope that this beautiful song will find its niche on this website.
This poem is known to exist in a total of 157 versions of which three are introduced here. The one best known in Finland is this VERSION 1 from Kanteletar, a collection of Finnish folk poetry gathered by Elias Lönnrot during several expeditions in the 1820s and 30s and first published in 1840.

This is the oldest printed version of the poem. First written down in Rantsila in the Finnish region of Northern Ostrobothnia in the latter half of the 18th century, it was published for the first time by Henrik Gabriel Porthan in the 4th part of his 1778 thesis »De poësi fennica«.
Giuseppe Acerbi (1773 - 1846), an Italian naturalist and explorer, was the one who made the poem internationally known by including it in his 1802 book »Travels through Sweden, Finland and Lapland to the North Cape in the years 1798 and 1799«. The poem is also included in another description of the same journey, »Voyage pittoresque au Cap du Nord«, written by Anders Fredrik Skjöldebrand (1757 - 1834), a Swedish count, general and statesman, who joined Acerbi in Stockholm for the expedition through Finland.

Velisurmaaja (The Fratricide) is a (very) old Finnish folksong. One of the many gruesome, cruel and highly dramatic murder ballads which are so common in all European balladries. The ballad comes probably from the same, widespread ballad stock of the well known Scottish Edward (Child #13, ”Quhy dois zour sword sae drap wi' bluid, Edward, Edward?”, in Percy's fake-antique spelling) and of Danish Sven i Rosengård: a striking, breathtaking dialogue between a mother and his son, in which he gradually reveals and confesses he has killed his (usually older) brother, pressed by his mother's precise questions, because the latter has "made his wife laugh" (i.e., he was making love with her). This is not the first old murder ballad included in this website: another specimen is French L'écolier... (Continues)

The Finnish word for International Workers' Day (May Day, Labour Day) is vappu, according to the name day of Vappu on 1 May. The two corner stones of vappu right after labour marches and demonstrations are sima and tippaleipä (see picture below). Here's a recipe for sima and here one for tippaleipä.
