Leve Palestina: The Rhyme of the Undamned
The Palestine Chronicle, March 11, 2024
by Louis Brehony
Fighting the ban, Leve Palestina is simultaneously a rebellion against proscriptions, right-wing media campaigns, and the constant attack on our right to solidarity with resistance.
Cultural effects of the Zionist genocide and the Gaza Resistance have compounded this now global confrontation. The steadfastness of the displaced, besieged, bombarded and massacred has seen hospital workers and families huddle together in song and poetry, while invading soldiers dance and defile the scorched land of Palestine.
Like all other phases of the Palestinian struggle, the present is enlivened by musical anthems. The prominence of Leve Palestina (Long Live Palestine), first performed a half-century ago by Palestinian-Swedish band Kofia, made it 2023’s “song of the year,” according... (Continues)

Translator’s note. This is a strictly literal translation of the song. In the motion picture The Zone of Interest, only a part of the song is heard while being played on the piano by the Polish young girl. There’s a rather free and artistic version of the verses in the subtitles, given here in a footnote.

Florence, Italy, 16 February 2024. A construction site for the building of yet another big, useless supermarket. A beam weighing twenty tons breaks, the construction site collapses and five workers remain under the rubble. Five more workers victims of capitalist profit: it happens every day, all over the world.
The lyrics of this song were written in 1968 by Pietro Bianconi, an Anarchist partisan who wrote a number of books about trade and workers’ struggles in the 1960/70s. The music was composed by Paolo Pietrangeli and Giovanna Marini. The song was also sung in a shorter version by Caterina Bueno for Dario Fo’s folksong show Ci ragiono e canto n° 2. Also sung by Gang in “Calibro 77” (2016).

A Song For David

“Back in the USA” vaguely narrates the story of a soldier coming home from war. The song sees Green Day back with its political critiques and pointing at some hypocritical views of the country. Billie shows the irony of the wars America is involved in and also dismantles the allegiance of blind patriotism in certain aspects of American society.

The hymn was known to Frederick Douglass.
Frederick Douglass was a writer, statesman and anti-slavery activist. He also escaped slavery to freedom in the North. In one of his books, he writes about the songs sung by slaves to encourage each other to escape.
