The first verse says, 'The death of the long broken arm of human law.' At times, it seems like there should be a code among human beings that is about respect and appreciation. Questa canzone era già inserita a commento di Mrs. McGrath, con la quale condivide il soggetto, il soldato va in guerra e torna senza le gambe, ma le assonanze finiscono qui. Questa risale alla guerra franco-indiana (1754-1763), ovvero al fronte Nordamericano della guerra dei sette anni tra Inglesi e Francesi, quella in cui è ambientato "L'Ultimo dei Mohicani"

Non si trovano molte registrazioni del brano, eccezion fatta per una recente versione interpretata dal supergruppo irlandese Ushers Island: Andy Irvine (Planxty), Dónal Lunny (Planxty, Bothy Band, Moving Hearts), Paddy Glackin (tra i fondatori della Bothy Band, prima di lasciare il posto a Tommy Peoples), Mick McGoldrick (inglese di Manchester, di genitori irlandesi, membro degli scozzesi Capercaillie, dei Flook e poi di Lùnasa) e John Doyle (ex Solas)

Le 3 octobre 2013, une embarcation transportant environ 500 migrants africains fait naufrage près de Lampedusa, île italienne proche de la Sicile. La catastrophe fait 366 morts, ce qui la classe au deuxième rang des plus grandes tragédies en Méditerranée depuis le début du XXIe siècle.
Fortement marquée par cet évènement, constamment rappelé avec les innombrables catastrophes en mer arrivées par la suite, Awa Ly a écrit cette chanson en réaction, de colère, d’appel au secours, d’appel aux dirigeants.

Una canzone dall'ultimo album del bravissimo Glen Hansard che ieri sera a Firenze ha dedicato la canzone a tutti gli "economic migrants". Glen è poi tornato sul palco alla fine della serata per duettare con Eddie Vedder.

La canzone affronta il problema delle pistole e della violenza delle gang giovanili dentro i campus universitari.



You gotta keep `em separated deriva da un fatto accaduto a Dexter Holland quando lavorava in un laboratorio di biotecnologia: doveva far sviluppare dei batteri per alcuni test ma questi si mischiavano e lui doveva tenerli separati. Da questo "I've gotta keep'm separated" è arrivata la frase nella canzone

On a sad day of our country dropping bombs on another, my hands at the piano started playing Somewhere Over the Rainbow. My heart spoke in words and music that it is not about what is OVER the rainbow, but here UNDER the rainbow, where we must evolve to learn to get along if our children are to have a future. By reversing the octave leap in the melody to begin the song, I offer a melodic tribute to the song composed for The Wizard of Oz

Q.The title track of this record, “Binary,” combines a fun and funky groove with rather deep thoughts. How did that song come about?
A. Well, it’s just a poem, really. It started as a poem. And then I put a groove to it so that it wasn’t a show downer. [Laughs.] And it’s really just one little groove. I mean, sometimes, I feel like, fuck it, who needs a chorus, or a bridge, or whatever? Songs don’t always have to abide by structure. As far as the lyrics, the song starts with “in the blue glow of gizmos,” which is where most of us are residing these days—in isolation, interacting with machines. It’s like this rabbit hole of … lack of relationship. So for a while, I couldn’t stop thinking about the idea that consciousness is binary. The binary structure is actually underlying everything. Green, personaggio che con disinvoltura da folksinger protestario – quale era a cavallo tra 70 e 80, con tre dischi all'attivo per la Folkways Records - è divenuto poi un brillante uomo d'affari e uno dei massimi dirigenti della Trump Organization, specializzato in marketing e casinò. Praticamente è diventato lo squalo repubblicano che lui stesso parodiava in questa canzone. Come si cambia per un po' di soldi! E pensare che negli anni 70 Green girava con una chitarra alla Woody Guthrie, con su scritto “These six strings neutralize the tools of oppression”...

As a society, it is time to acknowledge that unless a woman is in control of her own reproduction, she is not free, and it is the responsibility of our American government to protect and ensure the freedom of all American citizens. It is time we get serious about addressing and achieving this great unfinished business of civil rights in America. Only a constitutional amendment can ultimately save us from the whim of misogynists like Trump who have a vision of women as sexual objects and reproductive slaves.

In entrambe le località minerarie dedite all'estrazione del carbone si verificò che enormi accumuli di scarti di lavorazione, posti nel tempo a monte degli abitati, franarono a valle in seguito a giorni di piogge torrenziali, uccidendo nelle loro case centinaia di persone.
Responsabili furono le compagnie, che per aumentare il profitto non avevano provveduto ad uno smaltimento in sicurezza, e i governi, che avevano omesso i controlli più volte richiesti dagli abitanti, che sapevano della pericolosità della situazione ma molti di loro, le famiglie più povere, non erano in condizioni di mettersi da soli in sicurezza.
