Se nel Regno britannico di 6-700 il destino di un ribelle, di un ladro, o di un “poacher”, un bracconiere, poteva essere la morte per impiccagione (vedi Geordie, or My Geordie Will Be Hanged In A Golden Chain), nei primi decenni dell’800 la giustizia preferiva non sprecare un paio di braccia e spediva i condannati nelle colonie penali e nelle fattorie-prigioni in Australia.
Un modo piuttosto spiccio per colonizzare nuove terre ed ampliare i confini dell’Impero a costo zero o, meglio, facendo pagare il prezzo a poveracci, criminali comuni e prigionieri politici…

Nell’introduzione a questa ballata Riccardo faceva riferimento ad un testo ben più lungo cui “The Lament of the Border Widow” si rifà. Si tratta per l’appunto di “Famous Flower of Serving Men”, il cui autore fu tal Laurence Price, balladeer londinese attivo tra il 1625 ed il 1680, che la pubblicò nel 1656.
Molti gli artisti inglesi che l’hanno interpretata, primo fra tutti Martin Carthy, a partire dal suo album del 1972 intitolato "Shearwater”.

“In their early and most vociferous career in Australia, just before, during and after the First World War, they stood up in a rage against the Government’s plan to introduce Conscription.
When the people of Australia–twice–voted against Conscription, the Government under W.M. Hughes (“The Little Digger”) decided to make the IWW illegal. This it did by fair means and foul. Mainly the latter. Barker was, at the time, editor of the IWW newspaper, Direct Action and he was jailed for printing a cartoon of a soldier, crucified on a guncarriage while Mr. Fat–the Financier–raised his glass to war profits.
I first heard of Tom Barker in London when I was a young man. He was famous for having flown the Red Flag from St Pancras Town Hall, while he was Mayor there.

Uno struggente omaggio di Ewan MacColl alla madre, Betsy Henry Miller, che lo crebbe in mezzo a mille difficoltà, in una povertà resa dignitosa dal suo instancabile lavoro come donna delle pulizie negli uffici e nelle imprese di Salford e Manchester, un lavoro invisibile che iniziava nel cuore della notte e finiva quando la città cominciava a pulsare... Il padre di MacColl, William Miller, era operaio fonditore, militante socialista, spesso licenziato e bandito per via della sua attività sindacale. Credo che il lavoro in fonderia ne avesse anche minato la salute. La coppia perse tre dei quattro figli, sopravvisse solo Ewan, e nonostante tutte queste avversità la forza della piccola Betsy fu sempre incrollabile...

Nel 2009 il partito fascista britannico British National Party (BNP), nel corso della campagna per le elezioni europee, se ne uscì con un manifesto al cui centro campeggiava un aereo inglese Spitfire della seconda guerra mondiale con sopra il titolo “Battle for Britain”...
A parte il fatto che – come qualcuno fece notare a quegli ignoranti - la fotografia scelta era quella di uno Spitfire allora in dotazione all'aviazione polacca, chiaramente riconoscibile dalle insegne... Qui Chris Wood ricorda pure ai fascistelli decerebrati che gli Spitfire – dal suono così caratteristico dovuto ai motori Merlin di cui erano dotati – contribuirono proprio a porre fine al nazifascismo in Europa...

We’re written songs about religion before, and ‘My God Is Bigger Than Your God’ is just another song about religion. It’s just too big a subject to deal with in a humorous way, but I think as a lyricist you need to put across your opinions in a certain way.

Moreton Bay (a Convict’s Lament)
“Manifold’s text was collated by him partly from fragments recalled by several singers around Brisbane, but mainly from the text of a ballad by Frank the Poet, entitled The Convict’s Arrival, which was known to Ned Kelly (who paraphrased it in his famous Jerilderie Letter). His final text is so shaped and crafted by him it should really read “Manifold, based on traditional texts”. As no-one could recall the tune properly he set it to the Irish Youghal Harbour. Please Settle in Viet Nam
Hopkins recorded the song "Please Settle in Viet Nam" in Berkeley, California, under the direction of Chris Strachwitz (the founder of the Californian label Arhoolie Records), on 20 May 1969, for the session which produced the album Lightnin' (Poppy Records # PYS-60,002). But the song did not appear on the album. Strachwitz released "Please Settle in Viet Nam" on this single (Joliet # 205) and then later on the album Lightning Hopkins in Berkeley (Arhoolie # 1063). (1) Hopkins wanted to see "an ending to the war" and called on the government to settle the Vietnam issue. It also included a little twist. Hopkins said that his girlfriend actually had a man fighting in the war, and that he hoped "he'll stay forever" in the army, because he did not "want to leave that girl". This idea is similar to the "jody" theme - a mythical man in blues and jazz tunes who seduced the wives and girlfriends... (Continues)
