Nel 1824, quando il processo indipendentista in centro America era giunto al suo fulcro, conclusasi la brevissima parentesi del “Primer Imperio Mexicano”, si arrivò alla costituzione della “República Federal de Centro América” comprendente gli attuali territori di Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua e Costa Rica. La nuova entità politica ebbe fin dall’inizio vita difficile (e infatti non durò poi che 15 anni) perché per le necessità di bilancio si imposero nuovi e pesanti tributi sulla proprietà e per quelle della difesa venne reintrodotto l’odioso reclutamento forzato. I Toba o Qom sono un’etnia nativa del Chaco centrale, Argentina.
Li abbiamo già incontrati in Soy e Mi tierra, entrambe di Lucas Segovia.
Nell’estate del 1924 i Toba furono vittime di uno dei più crudeli e sanguinosi massacri che la storia della sottomissione dei nativi americani ricordi.
Il 19 luglio di quell’anno, nella colonia aborigena di Napalpí, più di 200 nativi Qom e Mocoví furono uccisi dalla polizia del Chaco e dalle guardie private dei proprietari terrieri. Un disco questo interamente dedicato ai popoli nativi argentini, in gran parte sterminati tra la fine dell’800 e l’inizio del secolo successivo.
Questa canzone, in particolare, è dedicata a Lola Kiepja, nata chissà in che anno nella seconda metà dell’800 e morta in Terra del Fuoco nel 1966, l’ultima sciamana del popolo Selk’nam (Onas) e una degli ultimi sopravvissuti di quell’etnia, estintasi completamente nel 1974 con la morte dell’ultima sua rappresentante in purezza, Ángela Loij.
I Selk’nam (chiamati anche Onas, nella lingua yagán dei nativi tehuelches) erano un popolo nomade di cacciatori-raccoglitori che abitava la Isla Grande della Terra del Fuoco, a sud dello Stretto di Magellano.

Nota: “yóroheu”, parola di origine selk’nam / ona (la lingua era di ceppo chon) che significa “amanecer”, “alba”. Alla fine del brano può ascoltarsi proprio la voce della sciamana selk’nam Lola Kiepja pronunciare la parola in uno dei canti, quasi un mantra, raccolti da Anne Chapman nei primi anni 60.

Un disco tratto interamente da un libro dedicato alla Masacre de Napalpí del 19 luglio 1924, ultimo atto dello sterminio dei nativi del Chaco argentino ad opera dei discendenti dei conquistadores spagnoli.
Il titolo è anche un omaggio a Melitona Enrique (1901-2008), ultima sopravvissuta dei sopravvissuti all’eccidio di Napalpí, una nativa Qom (Toba) morta alla veneranda età di 107 anni. poco prima della sua scomparsa fu a lei che il governo del Chaco chiese ufficialmente scusa per lo sterminio del suo popolo… Ci sono voluti più di 80 anni.

Parole di Buenaventura Luna (1906-1955), giornalista, musicista, compositore e poeta. Musica di Óscar “Cacho” Valles (scomparso nel 2003), chitarrista, membro del gruppo Los Cantores de Quilla Huasi, e Fernando Portal, compositore (tutti e tre argentini).
Nel disco di Yupanqui intitolato “Magia y misterio del folklore” del 1965, con Ramona Galarza, Los Cantores de Quilla Huasi e Santiago “El Chucaro” Ayala.
Una canzone su La Conquista del Desierto, la lunga e sanguinosa campagna militare che il governo argentino portò avanti tra il 1869 ed il 1888 contro gli indios mapuche e tehuelche con l’obiettivo di estendere il proprio dominio sulle regioni della Pampa e della Patagonia che i nativi ancora controllavano. Il bilancio della guerra fu spaventoso: circa 100.000 nativi furono uccisi, decine di migliaia imprigionati e deportati. Molti storici sono oggi propensi a ritenere che durante la “Conquista del Desierto” venne attuato un vero e proprio genocidio, secondo l’accezione del moderno diritto internazionale.

Tutelo/Saponi were Siouan languages spoken in the Ohio Valley. Tutelo was a language of Virginia. The last fluent speaker died in the 1990's, and few Tutelos remember anything of the old language today.
However some Tutelo people are trying to revive their ancestral language for cultural purposes.
The Saponi language has been extinct much longer, but it is thought to have been a dialect of Tutelo, both from the similarity in vocabulary and from historical accounts indicating that people from the two tribes could understand each other without an interpreter. The main difference is that the Saponi dialect appears to have borrowed a number of vocabulary words from southern Algonquian languages like Powhatan and a few from African languages (the Saponi Indians were known for sheltering African slaves).

The story of Leonard Peltier as described in the book "In the Spirit of Crazy Horse" was the inspiration for the Toad song Crazy Life. There are many disagreements and strong feelings on all sides about the shootout at Jumping Bull Ranch on June 6, 1975.
Leonard Peltier is an imprisoned Native American considered by Amnesty International, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, National Congress of American Indians, the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Center for Human Rights, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Rev. Jesse Jackson, among many others, to be a political prisoner who should be immediately released.

In the spring of 1864 the Cheyenne and Arapaho were ready for peace. They met with US Officers, Evans and Chivington, at Camp Weld outside of Denver. No treaties were signed. The Indians were offered a sanctuary at Fort Lyon. Black Kettle and over 500 Cheyenne and Arapaho travelled south to set up camp on Sand Creek, near Eads, the town later built on top of the massacre site. Some dissenters headed north to join the Sioux.
General Samuel Curtis sent a telegram, "I want no peace till the Indians suffer more". 700 Cavalry volunteers called "100 Dazers", assembled in Denver. The camps of Chief Black Kettle, White Antelope, Left Hand and others, lay in the valley before them. Chivington, with mostly drunken troops, headed to Sand Creek with 4 Howitzers.
Black Kettle raised both flags of peace. Chivington raised his arm for attack. Cannon and rifles pounded... (Continues)

Born in present-day South Dakota, Tȟatȟaŋka Iyotȟaŋka (Sitting Bull) became a political, military and spiritual leader of the Sioux tribe. Per certo perirono tutti quelli che erano con Custer (all'infuori del trombettiere Martini), e cioè esattamente i soldati che componevano le compagnie C, E, F, I e L.
Il computo dei caduti del 7° è a tutt'oggi controverso: 212, 225, 263, 268, 272….
206 furono i morti che il tenente Bradley e i suoi scouts contarono la mattina del 27 giugno.
Io, contando i soli militari delle 5 compagnie, aggiungendovi due ufficiali e un sergente per ciascuna e includendo Custer e il suo aiutante ten. W. W. Cooke arrivo alla somma di 263.
A questi bisogna aggiungere gli ausiliari civili, il corrispondente Mark Kellogg e gli scouts. Oltre, i 50 morti della rovinosa ritirata di Reno.
Ci vollero otto giorni perché la notizia del "massacro" arrivasse alla città di Helena nel Montana e di là corresse in tutto il mondo... (Continues)

Suo padre già nella prima metà dell’800 aveva deciso di non opporsi ai bianchi invasori ma di stringere accordi con essi. Fu così che ai Nez Perce – che per giunta si erano convertiti al cristianesimo – fu concesso di restare in una limitata area originaria tra Oregon e Idaho. Non durò molto. La “febbre dell’oro” travolse ogni patto e ai nativi fu imposto un territorio ancora più risicato, insufficiente per la loro sopravvivenza già minacciata dalle torme dei cercatori. Wampum Prayer

Un Wampum, o sewan, è una cintura utilizzata dalle tribù di nativi americani dell'America Nordorientale come oggetto rituale e religioso e spesso scambiato come testimonianza e vincolo durante la stipula di trattati o per ricordare avvenimenti storici.
Anche se originariamente il termine indicava solo le larghe cinture, è invalsa l'abitudine di definire in wampum anche altri capi d'abbigliamento o ornamento (collane, bracciali, cavigliere ecc.), creati utilizzando la medesima tecnica.

"Amerigo" è l'ouverture dell'album, una riflessione sulle imprese del navigatore Amerigo Vespucci, che ha dato il nome all'America. Ho immaginato che Vespucci arrivasse nel Nuovo Mondo con grandi aspettative di poter convertire i nativi, solo per trovarsi completamente trasformato dalla purezza della terra e della gente.

La bellissima canzone d'apertura di "Banga" (probabilmente il miglior album di Patti Smith da diverse decine di anni) è un sogno al quale, soprattutto nell'ultima parte, sarebbe sbagliato chiedere una qualche aderenza alla verità storica.
