This song, released in 2016, is dedicated to the memory of Norman Morrison and his act of self-immolation, performed below Secretary of Defense McNamara's Pentagon Office, in protest against the Vietnam War and devastating impacts on the Vietnamese people.
The "17 words" refer to the brief letter he sent, hours before the fact, to his wife Anne, explaining his decision. The chorus remembers the conflicting reaction to his extreme act, while the second part of the song recalls the consequences it had on his family and how he achieved "hero status" in Vietnam.

"Day is Done", scritta da Peter Yarrow, è stato l'ultimo singolo registrato da Peter, Paul & Mary prima dello scioglimento del trio. Peter Yarrow la cantò in pubblico come solista in varie occasioni, in particolare durante la marcia contro la guerra in Vietnam a Washington nel 1969 e al concerto in Central Park del 1975 per celebrare la fine della guerra. In quell'occasione fece seguire la canzone da un breve discorso in cui sosteneva che il premio nobel per la pace non spettasse certo a Kissinger ma a tutti quelli che negli Stati Uniti avevano protestato, cantato contro la guerra, erano scappati in Canada o erano finiti in galera per essersi rifiutati di partire.

The War Is Over
L'11 maggio 1975 si tenne un grande concerto al Central Park di New York per celebrare la fine della guerra in Vietnam. Phil Ochs partecipò cantando tre canzoni: I Ain't Marching Anymore, There But For Fortune (con Joan Baez) e questa The War Is Over che aveva scritto otto anni prima e che dava il titolo al concerto. Fu l'ultima volta che la canzone venne eseguita in pubblico dal suo autore. Phil decise di abbandonare questo mondo meno di un anno dopo.

Musica di Gary Bartz, con la sua formazione di allora, la NTU Troop
Nell’album intitolato “Harlem Bush Music - Uhuru”
Gary Bartz è un grandissimo sassofonista contralto e clarinettista che a partire dal 1967 ha suonato con quasi tutti i grandi del jazz. La sua cifra stilistica è costituita da una combinazione di soul, funk, African music, hard bop e avant-garde jazz. Negli anni 70 è stato assai vicino ai movimenti per i diritti degli afroamericani e contro la guerra in Vietnam.
E scrivere e, ancor più, interpretare quanto segue, nel 1971 poteva essere molto pericoloso, specie se non eri famoso come Jane Fonda, la quale nel 1972, in visita ad Hanoi, poteva permettersi di accompagnarsi personalmente a soldati nordvietnamiti su di un battello dotato di contraerea... Una foto che fece ovviamente scalpore negli USA...
La descrizione del Vietcong non corrisponde solo a quella di un qualunque combattente nordvietnamita ma a quella del Vietcong per antonomasia, Ho Chi Minh.

Una storia dimenticata, quella di Alice Herz (1882-1965).
Era tedesca e all’avvento del nazismo nel 1933 si era trasferita in Francia con la figlia.

Nel 1942 riuscirono ad emigrare negli USA e si stabilirono a Detroit, dove Alice lavorò come lettrice di tedesco all’università e la figlia Helga come bibliotecaria.

Is this record performed by Sylvia Robinson?
A year earlier she released the single Have You Had Any Lately (Stang # 5015) - the same melody and with almost identical lyrics, without the Calley references, written by Robinson.
(1) Robinson did in fact have three children.
(2) The song later appeared on the 1973 album Pillow Talk (Vibration Records # VI-126).
Anyhow, the structure of the verses, formed by repeating questions ('how long' and 'how many') took a similarly effective approach to Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind" - the narrator wanted to know "how many children did you kill" and "how much...of their blood did you spill". She declared that Calley's actions made him "inhuman" and "not fit for society".

Ovviamente non si tratta qui di una canzone completa ma di una strofa parodiata della famosa militarista e patriottarda "Ballad of the Green Berets", composta nel 1966 da un sergente maggiore dei Marines di nome Barry Sadler...
Direi che l'inserimento di questo frammento lascia un po' il tempo che trova, anche perchè non fu nemmeno messo a confronto con l'originale... Un copia incolla di poco conto.
Aggiungo che in "Warrior Ways: Explorations in Modern Military Folklore", a cura di Eric A. Eliason e Tad Tuleja (una ricerca del 2012, di alcuni anni successiva all'inserimento del nostro frammento) la paternità della parodia è attribuita ad un capitano di nome Hershel Gobler, e c'è anche una seconda strofa che, se avete voglia, vi andate a vedere direttamente alla fonte citata...

During The River Tour, Bruce Springsteen used the chorus and the three verses (verse 1, verse 2, and verse 3 below) from the original Creedence Clearwater Revival version, and he added two or three more verses that he wrote.
The lyrics "Well last night they pulled him out of his house / And shot him in the street" would later be used in THEY KILLED HIM IN THE STREET ("They took him from his house and killed him in the street") and Bells of San Salvador ("Well they took him from his house / killed him in the street").
RUN THROUGH THE JUNGLE was performed at least 3 times during The River Tour (138 dates, October 1980 to September 1981). On this tour, the song was the show opener and was played in a rearranged slower version extended with two or three Springsteen-penned verses.

The title track, "No More War" was centred around a speech given by Pope Paul VI to the United Nations General Assembly on 4 October 1965, captured on several LPs, including "Mission to America, October 4, 1965" (Columbia Records # xx2).
The Pope diplomatically did not mention any specific conflict, but sent out a general message of peace: "the blood of millions of men...useless massacres and fearful ruins have sealed the pact united you with a vow which must change the future of the world: Never again war, war never again! Peace". This criticism was in contrast to some American Church leaders who backed President Johnson in Vietnam - most notable Cardinal Francis Spellman (as dealt with in the "Dean Rusk Song" by Bill Frederick on the 1967 album "Hey, Hey...LBJ!" and in the unrecorded Tom Paxton song "The Cardinal" published in Broadside # 80, May 1967).

Durante la presidenza provvisoria e la campagna presidenziale LBJ fu molto cauto sulla possibilità di un’escalation militare in Vietnam. Era convinto che non fosse il caso di impegnarsi in un’altra Corea e, soprattutto, pensava che nel conflitto volessero trascinarlo i suoi nemici per distoglierlo dai “fronti di guerra” interni, quello dei diritti civili e della lotta alla povertà. Ma poi i vertici militari e dell’industria bellica gli prepararono la balla del Tonchino (raccontando fandonie su navi da guerra americane attaccate da motosiluranti nord-vietnamite) e i sondaggisti sondarono che l’opinione pubblica contraria alla guerra era la minoranza, non più del 25-30%...

Durante la presidenza provvisoria e la campagna presidenziale LBJ fu molto cauto sulla possibilità di un’escalation militare in Vietnam. Era convinto che non fosse il caso di impegnarsi in un’altra Corea e, soprattutto, pensava che nel conflitto volessero trascinarlo i suoi nemici per distoglierlo dai “fronti di guerra” interni, quello dei diritti civili e della lotta alla povertà. Ma poi i vertici militari e dell’industria bellica gli prepararono la balla del Tonchino (raccontando fandonie su navi da guerra americane attaccate da motosiluranti nord-vietnamite) e i sondaggisti sondarono che l’opinione pubblica contraria alla guerra era la minoranza, non più del 25-30%...
E poi è andata come andata…

Una delle più famose (e belle) canzoni dei Grand Funk Railroad, racconta del capitano di una nave che, nel corso di un viaggio, è caduto ammalato e, forse nel delirio della febbre, teme di perdere il comando, che la sua sua nave gli sia sottratta, o che addirittura la sua ciurma si stia per ammutinare, o che l’imbarcazione sia attaccata da nemici, da pirati... Teme, in definitiva, di essere alla fine del suo viaggio terreno e di non poter riportare la pelle in salvo a casa...
Una canzone onirica o, meglio, lisergica, come era quasi d’obbligo in quegli anni...
E infatti molti ne hanno interpretato il significato come un “viaggio allucinante”, moderna Odissea omerica scaturita dall’LSD... Altri invece hanno ritenuto che “I'm Your Captain” abbia a che fare con la guerra in Vietnam... E' morto ieri all'età di 74 anni Paul Kantner, co-fondatore della mitica band dei Jefferson Airplane. Protagonista della scena musicale della west coast americana, Kantner è stato stroncato da un attacco di cuore, secondo quanto ha riferito il suo portavoce al 'San Francisco Chronicle'.
Kantner fondò i Jefferson Airplane insieme con Marty Balin e Grace Slick nel 1965 e ne divenne subito il leader portando la band al successo con brani come 'Somebody to love' o 'White Rabbit'. Il gruppo, tra i più importanti del blues-rock psichedelico degli anni '60 e '70, si esibì anche a Woodstock nel '69.
"Il mondo della musica ha perso una vera icona", ha dichiarato in una nota Neil Portnow, presidente della Recording Academy, la società che assegna i Grammy e che aveva annunciato alcuni giorni fa che avrebbe assegnato un Grammy alla carriera proprio ai Jefferson Airplane.

"Through to his experiences of combat" - I'm not sure that can be assumed. The entire song could've been the thoughts of the young man as he lay in bed, the morning he was to enter the army. "Today was the day for action" could reference his thoughts that he should have evaded to the draft. The war sound effects don't necessarily mean he was at war ... you shouldn't take that so literally.

Siccome David Harris, il marito della Baez, fu arrestato per renitenza alla leva nel 1969, è evidente che questa canzone fu concepita per raccontare altro, cioè le violenze della polizia contro i manifestanti per i diritti civili. Il ripetuto richiamo all’uso dei cani durante la repressione ne è la prova.

Il soldato americano che l’11 marzo in preda a un raptus ha ucciso sedici civili nel distretto di Panjwai nella provincia di Kandahar, nel sud dell’Afghanistan, mi ha riportato alla mente il massacro, il cui anniversario cade in questi giorni, commesso da altri soldati americani quarantaquattro anni fa in Vietnam.
Il 16 marzo del 1968 i ragazzi della compagnia Charlie, al comando del capitano Ernst Medina, entrarono dalla parte settentrionale del villaggio di My Lai, dove ora sorge un grandissimo, giovane albero, e dove, allora, giocavano i bambini.
Svuotarono i caricatori. Buttarono le bombe a mano nelle capanne. Violentarono le ragazzine in branco, da veri boy-scout, poi le trucidarono con le baionette.

Another song-poem about My Lai, released in Boston, Massachusetts - these are song lyrics, sent to specialist publishing and recoding companies, usually in response to an advertisement, that have been set to music for a fee (around $200-400). (1) Composed by Ann Parks and Lew Tobin (he co-founded the label with Shelley Stuart, and he presumably took the writing credit for the music side). Performed by Norm Burns & The Satelites. The track, called "The Babies of My Lai" (Sterling Records # S-547), probably released in either late 1971 or early 1972 (based on the label discography), focused on the death of the children at the massacre. The narrator sarcastically said that "a little baby raised it gun" and so a soldier "raised his weapon in defense". The narrator mourned the deaths: "sleep baby sleep", and declared to "never forget what has been done". The lyrics did not mention or comment on William Calley's trial, but it leaned towards criticising his actions, and therefore it fell into the anti-Calley camp.

Will There Ever Be a Time?
The song "Will There Ever Be a Time?" (Bold Records # 377 / 358), probably released around 1969-1971 by Captain Foam, an obscure psychedelic folk group, based in Ohio, took a general anti-war position, while referencing the My Lai massacre. Written and sung by Richard Bertram, produced by Nick Boldi, and engineered by Gary Rhamy, the song was recorded in Peppermint Productions Studios, in Youngstown, Ohio. (1) Firstly, it expressed opposition to war, counting the dead, and questioning why they had to "see them fall". The narrator accused presidents of "trying to play god". He then called for the "money that they spend to build the guns and bombs", to be redirected towards clearing the "world of hunger", which would contribute towards "peace and equality". Were You There?
The country rock band Mason Proffit formed in 1968 in Indianapolis, Indiana, led by The Talbot Brothers - John Michael Talbot and Terry Talbot. While their two previous records made the charts, this one failed commercially. The song "Were You There" (Warner Bros. Records # BS 2657) contained socially conscience lyrics, running through several injustices throughout history - from slavery, to the Holocaust: "you cried when Hitler killed the Jews". It then moved to Vietnam, posing the question "were you there at My Lai?", and then entering into a plea for people to protest: "come all of you, it's time to take a stand".

Wake up America!
The album Wake Up, America (Big Toe Records # 1) contained several references to Vietnam, such as the tracks "Our National Anthem", "Chicago", and "The Drug Company". On the track "Texas Tweezers" Hoffman took a phone call on a radio show. The caller attacked Hoffman for being ignorant, an exhibitionist, and for criticising the country, which, according to the caller, would have got him killed in Russia. Hoffman responded by arguing that the US "killed a million people in Vietnam" which damaged her reputation. He then rhetorically ask the caller "what do you think My Lai was, a god damn Connie Island trip".

Tiens Lucien l'âne mon ami, une chanson de Johnny. D'accord, elle date, mais Johnny aussi . Mais comme on le sait, certains chanteurs en France sont d'une incommensurable longévité. Juste pour te préciser la chose, Charles Trenet chantait encore à 87 ans…
Certes, dit Lucien l'âne en riant et en se trémoussant dansant d'une patte sur l'autre, lui, il aurait même chanté comme fantôme… À propos de fantôme, je me rappelle très bien ta parodie : Je Chôme, tirée de sa chanson « Je Chante ». Mais quand même, il est mort…
Lui oui, mais il en est d'autres qui sévissent encore : Guy Béart, 85 ans ; Hugues Aufray, 86 ans ; Marcel Amont , 86 ans ; Annie Cordy : 87 ans et Charles Aznavour : 91 ans… et toujours en activité.

We Gotta Get Out of This Place
Il brano non è del 1966, come erroneamente indicato, ma del 1965.
Fu scritto dai songwriters Barry Mann e Cynthia Weil, coppia nell’arte e nella vita.
Adrian Cronauer (1938-), avvocato e speaker radiofonico americano immortalato dal compianto Robin Williams nel celebre film “Good Morning Vietnam”, in un’intervista di molto tempo fa confermava che “We Gotta Get out of This Place” è stata la canzone più richiesta di sempre dai soldati americani che combattevano in Vietnam.
La canzone, oltre che nella colonna sonora del film testè citato, si trova anche in quella di un altra pellicola incentrata sulla guerra in Vietnam, “Hamburger Hill”, diretto nel 1987 da John Irvin.
Fu scritto dai songwriters Barry Mann e Cynthia Weil, coppia nell’arte e nella vita.

“I giovani combattono in ogni città, in ogni campus universitario, non so se fanno bene o male ma combattono per il loro diritti…”
E ragioni per combattere in quel 1970 ce n’erano state a strafottere: l’assoluzione dei “Chicago Seven” per i disordini alla convention del Partito Democratico nel 1968, il massacro di My Lai in Vietnam, l’invasione americana della neutrale Cambogia, l’uccisione di 4 studenti da parte della Guardia nazionale durante le proteste contro la guerra alla Kent University dell’Ohio, la marcia su Washington del 9 maggio, i test nucleari francesi a Mururoa, il festival rock all’isola di Wight, il “Settembre Nero” palestinese in Giordania, l’elezione di Salvador Allende in Cile (preceduta di poco dall’assassinio, ordito dalla CIA, di René Schneider Chereau, un generale democratico che lo appoggiava), la nascita del regime segregazionista in Rhodesia…

Originariamente pubblicata sulla rivista "Come for to Sing" Vol. 7, No. 2, ma gli accordi pubblicati erano completamente sbagliati (quelli giusti si trovano nella pagina citata). La canzone non fu incisa in nessun album ma Paxton la cantò al concerto celebrativo della fine della guerra in Vietnam, The War Is Over, organizzato da Phil Ochs e svoltosi a New York l'11 maggio 1975.
