Talking Vietnam Blues

Talking Vietnam Blues
[1964]
Testo e musica di Phil Ochs
Lyrics and Music by Phil Ochs
Album: "All The News That's Fit To Sing"

Moreover in 1964 Phil Ochs, one of the top folk/protest singers in the US during the 1960s, released the song “Talking Vietnam Blues” and it was the first antiwar song that directly referred to Vietnam by name. Ochs’ own more specific, outspoken and straightforward writing reflected his belief that the “folk singer had to become a ‘walking newspaper’ to compensate for the mendacity and irresponsibility of television and the mass media” (James, 1991, p.235). In the literature it is written that Ochs was either mystically prescient or a sociopolitical prognosticator (Cf. James, 1991, p.235/ Auslander, 1981, p.108) because “Talking Vietnam Blues” was publicised “four months before the Gulf of Tonkin incident and the first major escalation of the American presence in Vietnam” (Auslander, 1981, p.108).
