“Eat Your Young” sees Hozier describe a feast being prepared and served together with the chaos that comes with it. According to the artist, the track is a taste of the 9 Circles of Hell more specifically the 3rd Circle, Gluttony. This is based on the first part of Dante Alighieri’s epic poem known as Divine Comedy.
The title could be alluding to the 1729 satirical essay, ‘A Modest Proposal’ by Jonathan Swift, where he suggests, as a solution to poverty in Ireland at the time, that the poor should sell their children to be cannibalised by the rich.

Ferma restando l’ispirazione dalla Modesta Proposta di Swift (del resto, irlandese come Hozier…), a mio parere nella canzone, apparentemente “giocosa” o scherzosa, c’è molto di più. Già dal titolo, che sembra piuttosto significare che la generazione futura morirà presto, e/o che la generazione attuale si sta pappando i propri figli. Desiderio ancestrale: il mantenimento del potere da parte di una generazione implica la distruzione di quella successiva, come nel mito di Crono (il Tempo!) che, essendogli stato profetizzato che uno dei suoi figli lo avrebbe soppiantato e privato del potere, iniziò a divorarli uno ad uno.
La canzone comincia appunto con una fame (personale) incontenibile, fame di carnazza e di sangue bruciato ma anche e soprattutto fame di divorare ogni cosa terrena (“fammi azzannare il mondo”). Il fatto è che Hozier è abbastanza noto per disseminare... (Continues)

Un brano che da noi è noto solo da qualche settimana, proposto a spron battuto da tutte le radio e già entrato nelle orecchie di tutti, accompagnato da video diretto nel 2013 da Brendan Canty.
“Take Me To Church” è una canzone d’amore, un’esperienza che Hozier descrive come religiosa nella sua purezza di vita, di morte e di resurrezione. E proprio per questo risulta all’autore ancora meno comprensibile come il Potere - molto spesso quello esercitato dalle chiese in nome della religione che credono di rappresentare, ma talora anche quello di governi autoritari o reazionari o di gruppi violenti generalmente appartenenti alla galassia dell’estrema destre - possa condannare la libertà, la purezza, la religiosità dell’amore nelle sue... “Nobody’s Soldier” focuses on the experience of witnessing war and violence worldwide in the digital age, including the mental health strain of being exposed to others’ suffering and the frustration of feeling helpless or complicit. Hozier reacts to these feelings by rejecting the pressure to tacitly support war and expressing uncertainty over his own position and impact.
