Lament singing is an old tradition among the Baltic Finnic peoples. Laments were sung, usually by older women, at funerals and weddings and at the time of men setting off for war. Lamenting is an ancient way of releasing emotions when one is feeling overwhelmed by grief, sadness, pain or anger. Lamenting is rife with symbolism and rarely uses straightforward descriptions. While previous generations of lament singers have died out, a new generation has arisen in Finland, keen on both preserving the traditions of old, and adapting them to suit modern issues.

And I say shame to those who consider themselves revolutionaries who do not know the words. Songs, poetry are action. And you cannot change the world if you are afraid to sing. So, to this end, I offer a new version of the first verse that hopefully remains faithful to the message of Pottier's original (utilising in part the work of others). It is not there to replace the original, but to make all consider what we are fighting for." - Len Wallace.

The tune captures a dark moment in US history. It deals with three enslaved black women Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey who were experimented on by James Marion Sims. Sims is commonly referred to as the founding father of modern gynecology. The video juxtaposes footage of the band performing with flashes of images related to Sims and the enslaved women he violated.
Front women Shawna Potter made the following statement about her motives for composing the tune and making the video: “This song is about all the stories our country has buried or ignored. I wanted to memorialize Anarcha, Lucy, and Betsey in the best way I knew how, through song, and the shooting of this video just happened to coincide with tearing down a statue of J. Marion Sims, the man who experimented on them and other enslaved women.”

This song is about how both the US government and the religious extremists from the Middle-East used propaganda to get both sides to want to go to war against each other (“God versus God, the undoing of man”). The title is a combination of America and the suffix -stan, which is Persian for country and is part of the name many Central Asian countries (Afghanistan, Pakistan).

Flood originally penned Freedom as an anti-war song, after the first Iraq War broke out in the Middle East. "The lyrics are meant as gospel for keeping things glued together as opposed to ripping everything apart," he explained.
"When I wrote those lyrics 30 years ago, I was fearful that America was headed in the wrong direction —I was against the war in Iraq. Now, 30 years later, we are facing an even larger crisis, a power struggle over the soul of America, with threats of a looming Civil War."

When the Australian Government decided on its cruel policy towards asylum seekers, its slogan was that it was stopping the boats. Boats are impersonal and have no rights. It could not be honest and describe its policy as stopping the people in distress, could it?

3. THE LIFE AND DEATH OF GEORGE OF OXFORD (1672/1696)
Come accennato nella ”Saga dei Geordie”, la più antica testimonianza scritta di una ballata di Geordie in una forma già molto simile a quelle più tarde e limate dalla tradizione orale, è questa Life and Death of George of Oxford risalente a un broadside (foglio volante) stampato senza data da P. Brooksley in West Smithfield. Siamo dunque nella parte nordoccidentale di Londra, nel quartiere di Farringdon Without; West Smithfield era, fra le altre cose, un quartiere deputato, nella Londra medievale, all'esecuzione di eretici, ribelli, criminali e dissidenti politici (vi furono giustiziati, tra gli altri, l'eroe scozzese William Wallace nel 1305, il capo della rivolta contadina Wat Tyler nel 1381 e i 200 protestanti messi al rogo durante il regno di Maria I d'Inghilterra).
Il broadside, come detto, non è datato; lo si fa comunque risalire... (continua)

Notes for A Convict Love Token
David Brown of West Sussex came across a coin etched by a convict ‘CG to SG’ in late 1830. He was able to trace a descendant of Charles Green because Warren Read had contributed research on his ancestor to the Hungerford Virtual Museum, In late 2017, Mr Brown came to Australia and presented the coin to Mr Read. It is now in the Camden Museum. The museum of Australia has a collection of similar coins – some 120 – which they call ‘leaden hearts’.
Charles, of Kintbury Berkshire, was in prison for his part in the rural protest movement known as the Swing Riots. Their leader’s nom-de-guerre was Captain Swing. These protestors, like the Luddites in urban areas, took direct action against the machines which threatened their way of life. They smashed threshing machines and burnt haystacks.
Charles etched the coin while awaiting... (continua)
