Hmm. This feels a little awkward, as I seem to be physically shaking as I go to post this. But… Here goes. The following is a song I have needed to write for 34 years, 7 months and four days. To be fair, for the first ten months of that I was locked up and unable to express myself in any real terms. If you are familiar with my song “Angels Along the Road,” that may take on a little more meaning for you after this. This is an introduction to my truth, the big ugly one I have kept mostly buried for a really, really long time. I’m hoping it might help to at least make sure that a serial criminal doesn’t leave this earth with high honors attached to his name.

Brujas se inspira en particular sobre los 35 feminicidios que ocurrieron en 2017 (el último, sucedido en Maldonado, inspiró la primera Alerta Feminista de 2018), pero pinta escenas de cosificación y violencia doméstica cotidiana tanto en tercera como en primera persona. Es un tema que por su universalidad podría aplicarse en cualquier parte del mundo, pero se enfoca tenazmente en la problemática nacional: "Uruguay natural con violencia de macho naturalizada / Yorugua bondadoso muerte a tu cliché y que la bruja sea inmortalizada", protesta como mirando a los ojos.
Es en este momento de ebullición era necesaria una canción como Brujas. No solo deja una de las mejores canciones de trap que se han escuchado en estos lares y eso es un mérito en sí mismo, sino que condensa un sentir, un estado de ánimo mundial y manifiesta una urgencia de la artista por expresarse. Petite chanson du maquis

Ce même si, calme avant la tempête, Petite chanson du maquis, le premier titre, est d’un calme étonnant. En apparence.
Le militant de la chanson qui est en moi, l’opposant politique qui l’est tout autant fera de cette chanson un hymne (je n’ose dire mais le pense : une profession de foi). Je suis, nous sommes, oui, enfants de mal donne, de cartes mal distribuées. Des résistants, combattant l’absurdité, la surdité. À l’image du phénix que Melissmell chante et qui orne la pochette de ce disque, nous revenons, combattons, chaque fois en des formes nouvelles, révoltes réinventées, tenaces, teigneuses.

Canción dedicada a Angela Davis, miembro del Partido Comunista norteamericano y simpatizante de los Panteras Negras. Relacionada con los activistas radicales conocidos como los Soledad Brothers, fue encarcelada por su supuesta participación en un intento de fuga en el que murieron varias personas. Después de pasar un año y medio en la cárcel y entre fuertes protestas internacionales por la arbitrariedad de su detención, fue declarada inocente en 1972 por un tribunal compuesto exclusivamente por hombres blancos. Tras su puesta en libertad, fue recibida en La Habana en un acto multitudinario, y pasó un tiempo en la Isla antes de regresar a su país.

Cantan as balas foi escrita en 2020, cando o meu medo comezaba a aumentar vendo o que estaba a acontecer política e socialmente, e cara a onde nos dirixíamos.
É unha canción lúcida, por iso escura, mais creo que é tamén unha das cancións con máis forza e vida de todas as que levo feito.

Mon album tourne autour des rapports humains. L’exil, par exemple, avec la chanson Dessine-moi un pays, écrite pour ces gens qui s’agrippent aux avions qui partent de Kaboul lors du retour des Talibans. Mais aussi, parce que je ne peux souscrire aux discours de la peur qui se développent ici, pour créer un pays où l’on serait montré du doigt dès lors qu’on a une couleur différente du blanc.

Il mio album gira intorno ai rapporti umani. L'esilio, per esempio con la canzone "Disegnami un paese" scritta per quelle persone che si aggrappavano agli aerei che partivano da Kabul al ritorno al potere dei Talebani. Ma anche, dato che non posso sottoscrivere il discorso del terrore che si porta avanti qui in Francia, per creare un paese dove non avremo il dito puntato contro quando si ha la pelle di un colore diverso dal bianco.

Il mio album gira intorno ai rapporti umani. L'esilio, per esempio con la canzone "Disegnami un paese" scritta per quelle persone che si aggrappavano agli aerei che partivano da Kabul al ritorno al potere dei Talebani. Ma anche, dato che non posso sottoscrivere il discorso del terrore che si porta avanti qui in Francia, per creare un paese dove non avremo il dito puntato contro quando si ha la pelle di un colore diverso dal bianco.

Nella mattinata del 20 ottobre oltre duecento persone stavano manifestando in place de Luxembourg (nei pressi della sede della Commissione europea) a Bruxelles contro l’impiego di armi chimiche e gas tossici da parte della Turchia. Utilizzati, ça va sans dire, contro la Resistenza curda nel Bashur (il Kurdistan del Sud, dentro i confini iracheni). In questo periodo soprattutto nell’area montagnosa di Werxelê (regione curda di Avashîn).
Ma contro i manifestanti curdi è immediatamente scattata l’ordinaria repressione a base di lacrimogeni e manganellate.
Eppure la cosa ormai dovrebbe essere di dominio pubblico. Se non bastavano le testimonianze raccolte e portate a conoscenza dell’opinione pubblica ormai da anni (soprattutto l’anno scorso, mentre era in pieno svolgimento l’operazione militare da Ankara in aprile), ultimamente... (continuer)

Long before Bob Dylan, the 18’th century Scottish poet and song-writer Robert Burns published an anti-war anthem. Surprisingly modern sounding (video below), the song rejects contemporary war mongering and focuses on the human suffering caused by conflict. However, in order to understand the historical context of the song, we do need an expert. We asked George Mcclellan, a director of the Robert Burns Association of North America, to set the scene.
