One of the many sad stories about conscientious objectors in Finland is that of Arndt Pekurinen, a peace activist and member of the Finnish Peace Union and the Antimilitary League. Having refused mandatory conscription in 1926 because of his pacifist conviction, he was imprisoned from 1929 to 1931 and again in 1939 when the Finnish Winter War broke out. During the Continuation War in autumn 1941 he was taken to the front with the order to make sure he did wear a uniform and bear and use a weapon. Having refused to do so, he was executed on the spot without trial. Yet another proof of the senselessness of war and disregard of basic human rights!

Il termine svedese per “obiettore di coscienza”, värnpliktsvägrare (dichiaro di offrire una frugale cena a chi sarà in grado, in mia presenza, di pronunciarlo correttamente), è assai più diretto dell'edulcorato e ambiguo termine italiano (tant'è vero che è stato assunto anche dai medici “antiabortisti”): significa senzi mezze parole “chi rifiuta [vägrare] il servizio militare [värnplikt]”. Ciononostante, sono stato costretto a utilizzare il termine italiano corrente; non me ne venivano proprio altri.

De son recueil « Wien 1938. Die Grünen Kader Gedichte », publié en 1946, est tiré le morceau interprété par Topsy Küppers (1931-), chanteuse, actrice et militante antifasciste autrichienne, dans son album « Immer Wieder Widerstand » (1973)

Theodor Kramer fut soldat pendant la première guerre mondiale, dont il sortit vivant, mais gravement invalide. Après l’Anschluss, sa famille fut persécutée parce que juive (sa mère mourut en 1943, internée à Theresienstadt). En 1939, Theodor Kramer réussit à fuir en Angleterre, où pendant deux ans, il vécut dans un camp en tant qu’« étranger de nationalité ennemie ». Due parole del traduttore. La traduzione italiana non poteva che partire dalla versione svedese di Jakob Fellman. Per due motivi: il primo è la sua completezza, cui più volte è stato accennato sia nell'Introduzione che nei commenti alle varie versioni, e il secondo è che non avrei comunque mai potuto tradurre da una qualche parlata Sami. In apposite note sono state tradotte anche le note originali presenti nelle Anteckningar del 1906, che in un certo qual modo gettano un po' di luce sulla vicenda narrata nel canto. Alcuni punti della versione svedese di Jakob Fellman, come detto, sono tutt'altro che chiari.

Le Suomalaisia lauluja pubblicate da Otto Donner nel 1876 ebbero anche un'edizione in lingua tedesca preparata da Otto Donner stesso (con il nome che aveva, il minimo che poteva fare era conoscere il tedesco alla perfezione!). L'edizione tedesca riproduce esattamente quella finlandese nei minimi dettagli (da notare che Otto Donner, notevolissimo filologo, indoeuropeista e sanscritista, ma anche finnougrista per scelta, era di madrelingua svedese ma fennomane per convinzione). La fonte della traduzione tedesca è l'edizione digitalizzata dei Lieder der Lappen, gesammelt von O. Donner, contemporanea a quella finlandese (1876, Helsingfors, Buchdrückerei der Finnischen Litteraturgesellschaft, quella che ora è più nota come Suomen Kirjallisuuden Seura). Otto Donner's Finnish version is an incomplete text following the Kemi Sami original text given by himself for the first time (see Introduction). The notes included directly in the translation are reproduced as they are printed in the 1906 edition of Jakob Fellman's Anteckningar; to be remarked is the rather curious form Waras, with the old-fashioned “w”-spelling (clearly of German origin), while in the rest of the translation the modern “v” is used extensively.

Jakob Fellman, Anteckningar 1906, p. 256-259. See Introduction on the nature of this translation: as a matter of fact, it is the only version of the song that is really complete. The Swedish translation is reproduced here in the language and spelling form of that time: the language used is high-falutin literary Swedish. The spelling forms of the epoch have been noted in footnotes including the current spelling; also the editor's original notes have been included. However, the 1906 editor warns that the translation is not clear in some points, and that it is probably a first draft.

mi mancano parecchie rime, ma molto carina la canzone. Da notare che sul finale la chitarra cita Les copains d'abord, famosissima canzone di Brassens sull'amicizia.

Harald Gaski, nel quale è presente il testo completo della sua gjendiktning in norvegese bokmål. “Gjendiktning”, come il tedesco Nachdichtung, significa piuttosto “riscrittura, adattamento”; ma senz'altro si tratta di un testo che segue molto più da vicino l'originale sami, ad esempio di quanto non lo faccia la versione inglese di Maren Skolem, interpretata da Moddi, questa sí un'autentica riscrittura (sebbene Maren Skolem, per sua stessa ammissione, si sia basata proprio sulla traduzione di Harald Gaski).
