"Fiume Sand Creek" is based on the Civil War massacre of a peaceful village of Cheyenne and Arapaho native Americans by a bloodthirsty U.S. Army Colonel despite the fact that the assailants raised both the American flag and white flags of truce. Two company commanders refused to participate, one of whom, Capt. Silas Soule, testified to the Army about the carnage. In a letter to his former commanding officer he wrote: "I refused to fire, and swore that none but a coward would, for by this time hundreds of women and children were coming towards us, and getting on their knees for mercy. I tell you Ned it was hard to see little children on their knees have their brains beat out by men professing to be civilized."

The album begins with sailors returning to Genoa, strolling back to their familiar homes on the cobbled paths that lead to and from the sea. ("Sweet and sour 'hare-of-the-tiles' pie" is actually cat pie, cats being referred to as roof bunnies.)Creuza de mä received both critical and popular acclaim upon its release. David Byrne told Rolling Stone that Creuza de mä was one of the ten most important works of the Eighties. The album grew out of a deep collaboration between Mauro Pagani, founding member of PFM, and De André. Pagani had been studying Mediterranean musics - Balkan, Greek, Turkish - and De André suggested that they make a Mediterranean album together, partly as an act of identity and a declaration of independence from the strains of Anglo-American music that were then dominant: rock, pop and electronic music. È sintomatico per questo sito che ci si trova una o due murder ballads in inglese, e quelle vanno bene perché sono belle (se capisce), ma per inserire qualche cosa in italiano o in polacco si fa una fatica immane. Che vi devo dì, la filoamericanità, o chiamatye la pure una certa anglomania pare codificata nei nostri DNA, oramai (che guai!), salutai.

Per salutarlo nel momento della sua trasmigrazione nel Lautes Nichts, avrei probabilmente (e piuttosto banalmente) scelto la frase Nomina nuda tenemus; fortunatamente ci ha pensato, e chi altri, Roberto Saviano (ma dormirà mai, quello?!? Altro che Gaspard de la Nuit!). Ne scelgo allora due. La prima è sempre dal Nome della Rosa: In omnibus requiem quaesivi, et nusquam inveni nisi in angulo cum libro. Ho cercato la pace in ogni cosa, e non l'ho mai trovata da nessuna parte se non in un angolo con un libro. La seconda è da una sua "bustina di Minerva": I social networks hanno permesso di esprimersi a legioni di imbecilli. Poi, chiaramente, a fare i "coccodrilli" sono davvero pessimo.
