Paul Celan was born Paul Antschel in Romania in 1920, and he became famous for his work in poetry and translation in 1960s Germany. He is one of the many Jewish writers I am studying in my class on authors in exile. Of course, when we say exile, we don’t just mean physical, political, literal exile; the language a writer chooses to write in while permanently abroad, what linguistic exile he/she chooses, is just as important as what country he/she resides in. Though he fled Romania for Vienna, only to relocate to Paris and remain there, becoming a French citizen in 1955, he consciously chose to write poetry in German throughout is life.

Paul Celan (Cernăuţi, 23 novembre 1920 – Parigi, 20 aprile 1970) è stato un poeta rumeno ebreo, di madrelingua tedesca, nato nel capoluogo della Bucovina settentrionale, oggi parte dell'Ucraina. Era figlio unico di Leo Antschel-Teitler (1890-1942) e di Fritzi Schrager (1895-1942).
Il futuro scrittore, sin dalla sua infanzia, trascorsa quasi interamente a Cernăuţi (oggi Czernowitz) e caratterizzata dall'educazione rigida e repressiva del padre, apprende la conoscenza della lingua e della letteratura tedesca in particolare grazie alla madre. I primi scrittori ai quali si appassiona sono Goethe, Rilke, Rimbaud; sin dal ginnasio coltiva un certo interesse per i classici dell'anarchismo, quali Gustav Landauer e Koprotkin, che preferisce decisamente alla lettura di Marx....
