"This song was a welcome straightforward critique of war when many of their other songs that have sounded anti-war they wanted to work as metaphors (the whole War All The Time album).
I know the commitment you've made is a big deal but it is hard to justify death and destruction. To quote the wisdom of bumper stickers: "Why do we kill people who kill people to show that killing people is wrong?"

What are you defending? Did I ask you defend me? Are you defending freedom? How is that? By killing people and tearing a country apart? Every war through all of time has been justified on noble grounds. They are thinking the same exact things you are, finding the same sort of justifications. It's like trying to put out fire with fire. We continue to burn.

Nell’estate del 1937, Giorgio VI e la Regina Elisabetta, incoronati di fresco, decisero di fare una visita ufficiale in Ulster, giusto per ribadire la soggezione del nord Irlanda alla corona inglese... Ma quando, il 28 luglio, il corteo reale si recò a Belfast, i repubblicani risposero alla provocazione e “salutarono” i sovrani a modo loro: appiccarono il fuoco ai posti di dogana lungo il confine tra le contee sotto dominio inglese e l’Irlanda.

Car s'il n'y prend garde, s'il ne trouve pas comme notre ami la parade d'un monde intérieur et inaccessible aux intrusions ennemies, c'est bien cela qui l'attend. Mourir à petits feux... Par suffocation. Telle est la description du monde de la prison.

"Prophets of War" was written by James LaBrie, who based the lyrics loosely on Joseph C. Wilson's book, "The Politics of Truth".
The lyrics talk about possible ulterior motives behind the Iraq War, while remaining "middle of the road".
The title is a play on words, where the "prophets" of the war, could also be gaining a "profit" from the War. During the recording of the song, Portnoy suggested fans could voice certain lyrical chants. In response to a message posted on the band's website four hundred fans gathered outside the recording studio to record the chanting, however only sixty could fit into the studio.

Altra canzone, insieme a The Banks Of Mulroy Bay, dedicata alla vendetta dei contadini irlandesi contro William Sydney Clements, signore di Leitrim, simbolo dei landlords che per decenni li avevano angariati, ridotti alla fame, uccisi, costretti ad emigrare.
Anche questa ballata è stata pubblicata nel 1962 in “The Fanad Patriots”, a cura di Patrick Doherty.

Il testo di questa canzone è stato pubblicato nel 1962 in “The Fanad Patriots”, a cura di Patrick Doherty, e sostanzialmente coincide (ed anzi, è più esatto) con quello che compare nel libretto che accompagna il disco dei The Men of No Property “Ireland: The Final Struggle”, dove il brano è eseguito da Wylde su arrangiamento di Barney McIlvogue.

Se in Erin's Lovely Home si racconta di come, alla metà dell’800, i landlords e la peronospora della patata siano riusciti a sterminare alcune centinaia di migliaia di irlandesi, costringendone più di un milione ad emigrare, ci sono però un paio di vecchie canzoni che raccontano l’azione opposta, cioè di quando alcuni contadini irlandesi, sopravvissuti alla “Great Famine” del 1847-1850, si vendicarono con successo della fame e dei soprusi patiti per colpa dei padroni inglesi.

Irlanda, 1847. L’intero raccolto di patate viene distrutto da un micidiale fungo infestante, la peronospora. E’ la “Great Famine”, la grande carestia, in irlandese “an Gorta Mór”. Contadini, fittavoli e mezzadri, con le loro famiglie, erano già ridotti alla fame dallo sfruttamento dei grandi proprietari terrieri, quegli "absentee landlords" che dall’Inghilterra aministravano le proprietà in Irlanda attraverso i loro agenti, spesso dei veri e propri taglieggiatori. Gian Piero Testa mi ha nominato questa canzone, che non conoscevo, in una sua e-mail privata. Parlandomene anche un po', a proposito di un vecchio partigiano che conosceva, e che è appena scomparso. Mi permetto, certo che Gian Piero capirà, di riportare le sue parole precise al riguardo: "Il vecchissimo partigiano se ne è andato. Funerali anodini, nessuno a ricordare che aveva fatto qualcosa, almeno lui. In questa canzone che chiude l'album "Gli spari sopra", a mio parere l'ultimo vero album di Vasco che merita, troviamo questo valzer dalla musica quasi paranoica e psicologicamente disturbante. Sulla scia di un album che già dal titolo era pienamente "contro la guerra", troviamo quest'ultima traccia, che ci ricorda, ancora, che "questa guerra non passa più", accanto a persone che sembrano non avere più cervello, ma solo una gomma malleabile da chi detiene il potere.

Scritta da Barney McIlvogue, sull'aria della canzone "The Auld Triangle" composta dai fratelli irlndesi Dominic e Brendan Behan.

Canzone dedicata a Bernadette Devlin, celebre attivista repubblicana e socialista nord-irlandese, protagonista negli ultimi 40 anni di tutti i momenti più drammatici e significativi del conflitto che ha sconvolto la sua terra; dalla battaglia del Bogside nel 1969 (ed al suo arresto e detenzione in quel frangente si riferisce proprio la canzone) al Bloody Sunday del 1972, all'"hunger strike" del 1980 e 1981. In quello stesso anno la Devlin ed il marito subirono un tentativo di assassinio da parte dei paramilitari protestanti, sventato (ma non prevenuto) dai paracadutisti inglesi che presidiavano strettamente la loro casa in County Tyrone.

Comme une Cigarette est la nonante et unième chanson du Cycle du Cahier ligné, constitué d'éléments tirés du Quaderno a Cancelli de Carlo Levi.

Depuis la fin des hostilités, lorsqu'en 1918, après Caporetto, Verdun, la Somme, l'Yzer et autres Piaves, les belligérants s'étaient dit avant de rentrer chez eux – lucides – « À la prochaine ! », est né le divin enfant : le célèbrissime « Soldat Inconnu ». Il n'y a pas plus connu que le soldat inconnu. Un soldat créé tout exprès pour la cause patriotique, un soldat choisi au hasard dans un gigantesque tas de cadavres...

Et , commente Lucien l'âne qui avait vu la guerre de Troie, vu le nombre de soldats inconnus accumulés en ce temps-là, il a dû y en avoir des veuves du soldat inconnu.

One of the riot control weapons devised by the British Army to maintain the military occupation of Ulster is the rubber bullet. Presumably, this more "humane" tool of warfare will demonstrate the "kindliness" of the authorities in the Six Counties, although its success in achieving that objective has been nil.

Una delle armi di controllo per le proteste escogitate dall'Esercito inglese per mantenere l'occupazione militare dell'Ulster sono i proiettili di plastica. Presumibilmente, questo strumento di guerra più "umano" dimostrerà la "gentilezza"" delle autorità nei Sei Paesi, sebbene il suo successo nel raggiungere quell'obbiettivo sia stato nullo.

To the memory of Patrick Rooney, aged nine, killed by a stray bullet, Divis Street, Belfast, during the fighting on the night of 14th August, 1969.
On that night, Northern Ireland's 90% Protestant police force, the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC), rioted throughout the Catholic ghettoes of Belfast. They savagely attacked innocent people and drove through the streets indiscriminately firing their weapons. One result of this demonstration of the RUC's fascist and racist interpretation of law and order was the murder of little Patrick Rooney while he lay in his bed.
One wonders if Patrick's father could view his little boy's body with part of his head blown off, the room awash with Patrick's blood, and then dismiss this horror from his mind with a "manly" shrug of... (continuer)

They have suffered most of the direct oppression of British imperialism and in return have produced many of the leaders and sadly but inevitably the martyrs who have paid with their lives to see this country free. People who will be remembered when the names of the generals and the politicians have long been forgotten, this is a song about them.
