When George Bush declared war on the women, men and children of Iraq, so eager was Bob Hawke to get his tongue all the way up Georgie Porgie's arse that he offered the help of the Australian navy before he was even asked! Jeff Pattersen was the first of what was to become many US marines who refused to fight. Some of them are still political prisoners in Bill Clinton's jails, even today.

La canzone fu registrata il 31 luglio 1991; fu trasmessa dalla televisione croata il 4 agosto, dalla CNN il 5 agosto, dalla BBC il 7 agosto, e in seguito da Rai1, Rai2, Rai3, ZDF, ORF, Channel 5, Soviet State TV, Australian TV, venendo trasmessa in 31 paesi in tutto il mondo. Proprio perché era rivolta al resto del mondo, il testo era in inglese.

Divenne l'inno delle madri dei soldati nei movimenti "Chain of Love" e "Mothers for peace".



Pur riportando questa canzone tra le canzoni contro la guerra, vanno sottolineate alcune incongruenze nel suo blando (e insincero) messaggio pacifista.
La canzone nacque in un'atmosfera relativamente rilassata, a Zagabria, quando la guerra era ancora nelle sue primissime fasi e comunque non toccava la capitale. Con "Refugees" siamo di fronte a uno dei riconosciuti capolavori del progressive rock, opera di uno dei suoi maggiori rappresentanti e della sua storica band.

"Refugees" e', in brevi, laconiche parole, un capolavoro di infinita dolcezza ed espressione umana: la sottilissima, morbidissima ugola di Hammill sembra appoggiarsi, letteralmente, sulla magnetica corporatura del brano; il sottoscritto e' catturato dal "feel" fiabesco ed etereo del brano, carpendo l'estrema poeticita' sia del testo che della struttura compositiva.

"Corporal Clegg" is a song by British psychedelic rock band Pink Floyd, and is featured on their second album, A Saucerful of Secrets (1968). It was written by Roger Waters and features David Gilmour on guitar and lead vocals. This song also marks the vocal debut of drummer Nick Mason (in addition to speaking the line "All right men, in you go!" Nick sang the "He won it in the war...", "In orange red and blue...", "He's never been the same...", and "From her majesty the queen...' lyrics); this was confirmed on the US rock radio program Rockline in 1992. (Interestingly, a contemporary lip-synched performance video of the song doesn't show those parts being sung.) David Gilmour also plays the kazoo on this song. The inventor of the kazoo was named Thaddeus von Clegg, which is perhaps why they chose to name the title character Clegg.

L'immaginario onirico della canzone risente del linguaggio poetico di William Blake. La poesia astratta descrive una visione da incubo. Ogni strofa fornisce una descrizione diversa di una società decadente.

Anche se il titolo della canzone stessa sembra riferirsi alla speranza del paradiso ("il giardino dell'Eden"), non esiste nessun paradiso nel luogo descritto nel brano. Al contrario, le immagini evocano uno scenario di corruzione e decadenza. Oliver Trager interpreta Gates of Eden come l'affermazione da parte di Dylan che una "cieca fede in una vita dopo la morte e nel perdono associato ad essa è la bugia più grande in quanto causa compiacenza nella vita terrena". L'affaire Dreyfus (1894-1906) fu il primo clamoroso caso politico-giudiziario scoppiato nella Francia della Terza repubblica.
Nel 1894 Alfred Dreyfus (Mulhouse 1859 - Parigi 1935), ufficiale di origine ebraica impiegato presso il ministero della Guerra, fu accusato di aver rivelato segreti relativi alla difesa all'addetto militare tedesco a Parigi.

Arrestato in ottobre, dopo un giudizio sommario Dreyfus fu degradato e condannato alla deportazione a vita nell'isola del Diavolo (Caienna).
