L’inno agli immigrati The Sunnyside of the Street contiene uno dei ritornelli più riusciti di MacGowan: “Ho visto quel treno e ci sono salito / Con il cuore pieno d’odio e di voglia di vomitare / Ora cammino sul lato al sole della strada”. Con la melodia di Spider Stacy al tin whistle e l’ottima mandola del co-autore Jem Finer, la canzone tratteggia un quadro realistico della speranza e dell’angoscia che si provano nel lasciare la propria terra natale per andare in cerca di fortuna. Grazie alla produzione di Joe Strummer dei Clash (che ha anche sostituito brevemente MacGowan quando i Pogues l’hanno cacciato, dopo questo album), il ringhio di MacGowan si adagia dolcemente nella sunny side del mix. “Quel giorno ho capito che sarei rimasto proprio dove sono”, canta, “sul lato al sole della strada”.

Wounded Child No Surviving Family

Gli operatori sanitari di Gaza, Medici senza frontiere (MSF), hanno condiviso che il numero di bambini senza familiari sopravvissuti che arrivano per cure mediche è così alto che è stato coniato un nuovo acronimo per identificarli: “WCNSF” (Wounded Child No Surviving Family ).
Un mese di incessanti bombardamenti su aree civili densamente popolate ha esacerbato la già critica situazione di salute mentale dei bambini di Gaza con conseguenze di vasta portata, poiché le strategie di reazione e gli spazi sicuri vengono strappati via e i servizi e l’assistenza di salute mentale vengono tagliati, afferma Save the Children.

Nell’ultimo mese, 4.506 bambini sono stati uccisi a Gaza, e altri 1.500 sono dispersi, presumibilmente sepolti sotto le macerie. Altri 43 bambini sono stati uccisi nella Cisgiordania occupata. L’agenzia umanitaria ha avvertito... (continuer)

Album: The Use Of Ashes

Nel 1970 i Pearls Before Swine del compianto Tom Rapp con questa canzone sembrano narrare la storia della fine della Rigel, anche se ne storpiano leggermente il nome. La nave norvegese era stata costruita nel 1924 a Copenaghen, in Danimarca. All'epoca era utilizzata dai tedeschi per l'ignobile trasporto dei prigionieri e venne affondata da un aereo della flotta britannica Air Arm, al largo della Norvegia il 27 novembre 1944 con più di 2500 vittime. Il relitto è rimasto affondato fino al 1969, quando fu demolito e i resti dei morti sepolti nel cimitero internazionale di guerra sull'isola di Tjøtta. Il cimitero era stato consacrato proprio nel 1970, in memoria ai morti della nave: tutte le tombe anonime e una sola lapide a forma di croce.

Il nuovo singolo, di cui sarà disponibile anche il Bright-Side Mix di Mark 'Spike' Stent e l'Atmos In-Side Mix di Hans-Martin Buff, è stato l'ultimo a essere scritto per l'album.
La canzone, come tutte quelle che l’hanno preceduta, è accompagnata dalla cover firmata da un artista. In questo caso si tratta di 'Soundsuit', opera dell'artista di Chicago Nick Cave.

Scritto e prodotto da Peter Gabriel, "Live and Let Live" è una canzone sul perdono, la tolleranza e l'ottimismo. Una gioiosa e positiva nota finale per l'album.

Come al solito le parole di Peter Gabriel accompagnano e illustrano la canzone.

Notes From A Holocaust

In the mirror world, this slogan is controversial, and is a veiled threat of genocide against the Jewish people. In the real world, the ethnonationalist Jewish-supremacist state of Israel has been committing a genocide against the Palestinian people for the past 75 years, and this slogan is a slogan of liberation for all the people who live between the river and the sea. As with similar slogans in the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa, it's about equality between all peoples, not genocide. That's what Israel is doing. As the Israeli authorities openly and publicly say, this is "Nakba 2.0." We should believe them, they're serious.
