My father was a member of “Giustizia e Libertà” (“Justice and Freedom”, a clandestine partisan organization) and used to carry clandestine press from Turin to Alba. In October 1944 I was an eyewitness of the entrance of the partisans into Alba's Cathedral Square. I was an attentive and curious girl, and remember very well that they sang “Fischia il Vento” and also a “feminine version” of Bella Ciao:

Siberian Iris
I wrote "Siberian Iris" as an anti war song for Ukraine. Ever since February 2022, I've been watching the unfolding events with horror. I've lived in Britain and on the European continent, so I LOVE Europe. And I hate to see the breakdown in communication like this.
So I made this anti war music video. And I'm joining other musicians on YouTube who've written their own "stand with Ukraine" song. I hope I can raise money for the Ukrainian people (links below!), but I also hope that people affected by the war will take strength and hope from this song. That's what the Siberian iris flower stands for: strength and hope
This song is also for the large number of Russian citizens who don't support the war, and have bravely adopted the "нет войны" slogan ("No to war"), despite the risks to their own freedom and well-being.

Il titolo dell'album può essere ovviamente "Popolo" in tedesco ma in sloveno significa "Lupo" (mentre sulla copertina sono raffigurate delle pecore). La band slovena potrebbe voler intendere quindi di essere un "lupo travestito da pecora" e di costruire un brano critico di ogni nazione basato sul rispettivo inno nazionale.

E’ convinzione abbastanza radicata, presso un buon numero di persone, che “sapere l’inglese” sia un segno di banalità mentale, di disperante normalizzazione, di acquiescenza all’ovvio e all’ordinario, di obbedienza al potere e all’imperialismo globale. In realtà, in tutto questo sussiste -a mio parere- un equivoco di fondo: quello che l’idioma cui si riferiscono tutte queste cose sia effettivamente l’ “inglese”. L’inglese non esiste praticamente più, ed ha cessato di esistere da un bel pezzo anche nei paesi dove lo si dovrebbe parlare come lingua materna (figuriamoci quindi in Italia, paese dove “dovere” si dice sempre “must”). Al suo posto si parla e scrive una specie di idioma planetario che assomiglia oramai sempre di più alla “Neolingua” di Orwell, pur non essendo stato ancora codificato precisamente, e che peraltro continua arbitrariamente ad essere... I was trying to find a folk song from Teesside and this one, with words from rural miner Richard Watson (1833-1891) caught my eye. The theme of so-called economic migration rings true in the modern age even if some of the more alarming details regarding "poisonous serpents" now seem a little far-fetched. We prefer to think of those lines as more metaphorical than originally intended!

I saw his photograph on the news in our country, and I couldn’t quite believe what I was seeing. These are human people, they’re not just statistics and names and demographics; they’re people who meant something. It connected with the idea of what do I want to do with my life, and how do I want to remember people. It became a tribute to living life and commemorating somebody that you love.

Paul Smith: This song was vaguely inspired by the bleak, gnarled landscapes depicted by Paul Nash in his role as an official WW1 artist, such as the mockingly-titled 'We are Making a New World' (1918). In that context, the song speaks for itself. This was the first original song I brought to Rachel, to see if she might be interested in collaborating, and to see if our two musical worlds might have a meeting point.
