Unspoken
![Unspoken](img/upl/In_It_Together.jpg)
Unspoken features on Greg Harper's album 'In It Together' released in 2019.
Veterans from many wars, over time, have rarely spoken about their war time ordeals and experiences. Many kept everything hidden from their families until they themselves passed away.
How could you explain what you had endured, or done, to someone with no concept of the reality of war.
It remained Unspoken.
WW1 slang meanings.
White Feather:
Given by ladies to men who hadn’t signed up to fight, as a symbol of cowardice.
Pear Drops:
Clouds of Poison gas.
Goodnight Kiss:
The last shot of the day by a waiting sniper, looking for a careless victim at dusk.

Pour nous mettre en rou-ou-ou-ou - te ;
Encore un petit verre de vin,
Pour nous mettre en train. »

Noi torniamo all’antico».

Same Again Tomorrow
Rich had been working on a song focused on the fighting 69th regiment. I loved the reference to their bravery during the Civil War, and loved the use of their battle cry. I wanted to add more to their story. The 69th has been a part of almost every conflict since the Civil War. I referenced a poem called the Rogue Bouquet by Joyce Kilmer. Sadly he was killed during the battle of Rogue Bouquet Wood during WWI. His Poem was read during the funeral of the fallen soldiers in France. -Brendan
I was exploring Gettysburg with my family and came across the Irish Brigade Monument. I'd heard about the "Fighting 69th" but did some more reading. I was able to knock out the first verse and chorus pretty quickly, and turned to Brendan to flesh out the rest. -Rich

Paul Smith: This song was vaguely inspired by the bleak, gnarled landscapes depicted by Paul Nash in his role as an official WW1 artist, such as the mockingly-titled 'We are Making a New World' (1918). In that context, the song speaks for itself. This was the first original song I brought to Rachel, to see if she might be interested in collaborating, and to see if our two musical worlds might have a meeting point.
liner notes of the album
Paul comments: “The Natural Urge is, ultimately, an anti-war song, but I tried to write something more atmospheric and less obvious than that might imply. The guitar riff reminded me of a folk melody, and the theme also seemed to fit with the tradition of protest.”
Rachel adds: “I enjoy the brooding atmosphere that builds through The Natural Urge with layered harmonium and guitar, and how the clarinet blends with our voices, making it sound like a haunting third voice.”

Album: God of the Serengeti
(continuer)

Blind Willie Johnson - When The War Was On - 1929
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
"When the War Was On" is a call and response blues song recorded in 1929 by Blind Willie Johnson and Willie B. Harris, who is thought to have been his first wife. Johnson plays bottleneck guitar, and sings throughout in his 'growl' (false bass) voice; Harris sings soprano.
The war referred to is World War I (1914–18). The lyrics reference U.S. President Wilson (1913–21) and the German Kaiser; the United States entered the war in 1917.
Unusually for Johnson, the song deals with a temporal rather than a spiritual subject.
--------
Da un commento del video :
This actually sounds more like a war protest song than gospel

Alpini in montagna (E tu Austria)
anonyme
Fonte: A.V. Savona - M.L.

A chi ignora non dire;
Non dire la cosa, ove l'uomo
E la vita s'intendono ancora.
Ma afferra la donna
Una notte, dopo un gorgo di baci,
Se tornare potrai;
Sòffiale che nulla del mondo
Redimerà ciò ch'è perso
Di noi, i putrefatti di qui;

These lyrics have been written, assumably soon after Ralph Chaplin's original ones, by an unknown Finnish-American author, propably a Wobbly, i.e. a member of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), or »tuplajuulainen« (a double-u'er) as the Finnish Wobblies used to call themselves.

The Great War
2014 was the centenary of the “war to end all wars” and I had the idea to compose some music around the subject. Rather than just release one song or EP in 2014, I decided it would be an interesting concept to release one song a year, from 2014 to 2018 that, combined, would form one (longer) piece of music.
In 2018 Bad Elephant approached me with the idea of releasing the project as a full album and this opportunity has allowed me to re-record and reinterpret the songs I had written since 2014 and also include some additional ones, the end result being The Great War album.
