Thodoris detto Louk, abbreviazione per Loukanikos (da “λουκάνικο”, ossia “salsiccia”) è il cane mascotte dei manifestanti di Atene, in particolare dei ragazzi di Exarchìa, il quartiere universitario (ed anarchico) cuore della grande rivolta contro la classe dirigente ed i capitalisti nazionali e internazionali che con le loro politiche e speculazioni vorrebbero mettere in ginocchio la Grecia.

Apprendo ora che Loukanikos, il "riot dog" greco, è morto nei giorni scorsi.
Pare che avesse una decina d'anni, che non sia mai mancato ad una manifestazione e che causa della morte siano il CS e tutti gli altri gas che l'indomito bastardo è stato costretto a respirare, lui che non ha mai nemmeno potuto usare una maschera e neppure un fazzoletto...

Loukanikos sulla Luna
Se stasera si guarderà la Luna, ci sarà anche Loukanikos. Ha passato, come diceva non mi ricordo quale essere umano, il suo quarto d'ora di notorietà, e qualcuno magari se ne ricorderà pure: il cane delle manifestazioni greche, sempre in prima fila, chiamato in un primo tempo Kanellos (o forse era un altro cane, quando c'entrano mezze leggende anche i nomi fluiscono), che vuol dire "valoroso" in greco, e poi riportato ad un ben più prosaico e canino nome (Loukanikos vuol dire "salsiccia", come la lugànega, nel quale si tramanda il nome della Lucania, antichissima terra d'insaccati di maiale). Ma quel cane c'era per davvero, in mezzo ai riots di questi anni a Atene; leggenda sia, ma stavolta è un mito con tanto di fotografie e di lacrimogeni polizieschi, soprattutto. For 66 days he didn't eat – which is exactly how long Bobby Stands was on hunger strike, leading to his early death.

John Brown (Torrington, 9 maggio 1800 – Charles Town, 2 dicembre 1859) è stato un attivista statunitense, simbolo della causa antischiavista cui si dedicò anche mediante la lotta armata e per cui pagò con la vita. Egli fu infatti impiccato in seguito al fallito assalto all'arsenale federale di Harper's Ferry con le cui armi voleva dare il via ad una rivolta grazie al sostegno degli schiavi nelle contee occidentali dello Stato della Virginia.

"I wrote the song for the Occupy movement. I landed in Philadelphia after 5-1/2 weeks on tour in Europe on September 16th and headed up to Brooklyn, where I had a gig that night. The next day was the first day of these ongoing protests on Wall Street and around the country and the world. In the course of a 7-week tour of the US and Canada I visited 18 Occupations.
This song has been well-received by Occupiers and their supporters, so I thought I'd spend a day at Big Red Studio when I got home to Portland, and I did -- with a stellar cast of musicians: Jarrod Kaplan on percussion, Arcellus Sykes on bass guitar, with Billy Oskay producing and engineering and Jim Cuda assisting.
As with any of my songs, you're welcome to play it, use it in videos, sing it, etc. If you want to sing it, it's easy - 3 chords: D, A and G!

It's strange getting older.. When I was young the old people around me were the 1930's generation, veterans of the massive Depression-era struggles of the day. Bob Steck lived a few miles down the road from my mother in Connecticut and was, among other things, a veteran of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade and spent 16 months in one of Franco's concentration camps. He died a couple years ago at the venerable old age of 95, and this song is for him and others like him. Many of them of course were killed in battle in Spain long ago. Most of those who survived the war spent the rest of their lives serving humanity in one way or another. The few survivors are now in their nineties.

"I already recorded this song on my CD, Make It So [1996], and might not have recorded it once again, except that when Anne Feeney heard me sing it around a campfire at the Kerrville Folk Festival, she said she liked it but that it might stand a little editing. I had long thought that myself, and after she made the suggestion, Chrysler helped me cut out half the verses during a long drive one night someplace in the Midwest. My other name for the song is "Labor History 101." I used to call it "Ballad of the Proletariat," but Pete Seeger suggested I change the title, pointing out that "proletariat" is a "long, Latin word" which "might as well be in Swahili, or Chinese." I originally wrote the song in the spring of '93, and it has obviously been a victim of the "folk process."
