Le ragioni storiche del conflitto risalgono alla prima metà del diciannovesimo secolo, quando l’impero russo mise in atto un processo di cristianizzazione del Caucaso meridionale, dopo la sconfitta della Persia e il conseguente trattato di pace di Turkmenchay (1828), trasferendo in maniera coatta 50.000 armeni provenienti dalla Persia nella regione, in particolare nei khanati azeri di Karabakh e Erevan.
