Scritta da Roebuck "Pop" Staples (1914 –2000), patriarca e membro dei Staples Singers, insieme al figlio Pervis e alle figlie Mavis, Yvonne e Cleotha.
Il Tallahatchie citato nel brano è il fiume in cui il 28 agosto fu gettato il corpo del quattordicenne afroamericano Emmett Till, torturato selvaggiamente, ucciso e gettato nelle acque del fiume che scorre presso Money, Mississippi. Affinchè il corpo non riemergesse venne ancorato con del filo spinato ad una pesante sgranatrice per il cotone.
Gli assassini, due bianchi, si chiamavano Roy Bryant e J. W. Milam, il suo fratellastro: furono processati ed assolti, coperti da una bieca campagna di stampa e addirittura dal presidente USA di allora, Dwight D. Nell'album intitolato “Why”
Una canzone dedicata ai cosiddetti Little Rock Nine, un gruppetto di nove studenti afroamericani che nel 1957 si iscrissero alla scuola superiore di Little Rock, Arkansas.
Il governatore segregazionista Orval E. Faubus mandò i soldati ad impedire l'ingresso ai nuovi alunni, ma il presidente Eisenhower mandò l'esercito federale a scortarli affinchè potessero entrare. Finalmente ammessi, i nove furono costretti a subire ogni sorta di violenze ed angherie inflitte loro dai compagni bianchi. Particolarmente accanite furono le ragazze, che arrivarono a gettare dell'acido in faccia a Melba Joy Pattillo, una dei nove.
