As opposition to the Viet Nam war increased, so did the anti-war songs. A song from the Civil War - The Cruel War Is Raging - was revived by several performers such as Joan Baez and Peter, Paul & Mary, and simply titled Cruel War.

The Cruel War is raging, Johnny has to fight
I want to be with him from morning to night.
I want to be with him, it grieves my heart so,
Won't you let me go with you?
No, my love, no.

Tomorrow is Sunday, Monday is the day
that your Captain will call you and you must obey.
Your captain will call you it grieves my heart so,
Won't you let me go with you?
No, my love, no.

I'll tie back my hair, men's clothing I'll put on,
I'll pass as your comrade, as we march along.
I'll pass as your comrade, no one will ever know.
Won't you let me go with you?
No, my love, no.

Oh Johnny, oh Johnny, I fear you are unkind
I love you far better than all of mankind.
I love you far better than words can e're express
Won't you let me go with you?
Yes, my love, yes.

Yes, My Love, Yes.

THE CRUEL WAR IS RAGING

Oh the cruel war is raging
Your daddy must fight
And I know I will miss you
From morning till night
You cannot go with me
It grieves my heart so
You cannot go with me
Oh no my son no

For your waist is to slender
Your fingers to small
And your cheeks are to tender
To take the cannon-ball
They will give me shiny medals
They'll call "the killing brave"
But I'd rather hold my darling son
Then fill a thousand graves

I will fight through the winter
Through Summer, Spring and Fall
And there's many a man that I will kill
That I never known at all
O listen, oh listen to me Johnny
And heave my story well
There's no glory in the killing
Just the agony of hell

Oh the cruel war is raging
Your daddy must fight
And I know I will miss you
From morning till night

GUERRA CRUDELE

No, amore mio, no.

Domani è Domenica, Lunedì è il giorno
in cui in tuo Capitano ti chiamerà e dovrai obbedire.
Il tuo Capitano ti chiamerà e mi affligge il cuore perciò,
Non mi lascerai venire con te?
No, amore mio, no.

No, amore mio, no.

E so che mi mancherai
Dalla mattina alla sera
Non puoi venire con me
Mi affligge il cuore perciò
Non puoi venire con me
Oh no, figlio mio, no

Perché la tua vita è sottile
Le tue dita troppo piccole
E le tue guance sono troppo morbide
Per prendere le palle di cannone
Mi daranno medaglie scintillanti
Invocheranno il "coraggioso fatale"
Ma stringerei il mio figlio adorato
Piuttosto che riempire mille tombe

Combatterò d'inverno
D'estate, primavera ed autunno
E ucciderò più di uomo
Che non avrò mai conosciuto
Oh, ascolta, ascoltami Johnny
E sospira bene la mia storia
Non c'è gloria nell'uccidere
Solo l'agonia dell'inferno

Oh, infuria la guerra crudele
Il tuo papà deve combattere
E so che mi mancherai
Dalla mattina alla sera

LA CRUEL GUERRA

La cruel guerra brama
i en Joan ha de partir
jo no vull restar sola
de dia i nit
No vull restar sola
això em destrossa el cor
deixa´m venir, deixa´m
No, amor meu, no

Demà ja és diumenge;
l´altre has de partir
el teu capitá et crida
i cal obeir.
El teu capitá et crida
això em destrossa el cor.
deixa´m venir, deixa´m
No, amor meu, no.

Em tallaré les trenes
d´home em vestiré
seré el teu camarada
quan junts marxarem
Seré el teu camarada
ningú no ho sabrà
Deixa´m venir, deixa´m
No,amor meu, no

Oh, estimat escolta´m
no siguis tan cruel
jo t´estimo molt més
que tot el món junt
t´estimo molt més
tant que no ho sé dir
Deixa´m venir,deixa´m
Si,amor meu, si

KUTSU RINTAMALLE

Voi, John, sulle kutsun ne rintamalle toi.
Sun luotasi poissa mä olla en voi.
Sua seurata tahdon, sä näet kyyneleet.
Sua seurata saanko?
Et, rakas, et.

Vain huominen päivä on meillä jäljellä.
Kun kapteeni kutsuu, sun on mentävä.
Sun pakko on mennä, sä näet kyyneleet.
Sua seurata saanko?
Et, rakas, et.

Mä puen univormun ja leikkaan hiukseni
ja siis hyvin käyn aseveljestäsi.
Ei naiseksi arvaa mua toiset sotilaat.
Sua seurata saanko?
Saat, rakas, saat.

Et saa epäreilu nyt olla. Tiedät sen:
oot ainoain, läheisin ihminen.
Sen voi todistaa koko taivas, kaikki maat.
Sua seurata saanko?
Saat, rakas, saat.

Mi pare che ci sia qualche relazione tra questa canzone e The Warfare Is Raging...

No quiero estar sola, tampoco mi corazón,
déjame acompañarte.
No, mi amor, no.

No, mi amor, no.

Me cortaré el pelo, de hombre vestiré,
seré tu camarada y a tu lado iré.
Seré un compañero, nadie lo sabrá,
déjame acompañarte.
No, mi amor, no.

Oh, Johnny, oh, Johnny, no seas tan cruel,
tu eres toda mi vida, mi mundo eres tú.
Quisiera mostrarte mi gran amor por ti,
déjame acompañarte.
Sí, mi amor, sí.
