Easy Rider

One of the most memorable uses of this song was in the film Easy Rider (1969), to express the sense of liberation from mainstream culture.

The lyrics of "Wasn't Born to Follow" celebrate the freedom that hippies enjoyed in the late 1960s. They express the need for escape and independence. Music critic Johnny Rogan describes the lyrics as an "evocation of pastoral freedom and the implicit desire to escape from the restrictions of conventional society."

Wasn't Born to Follow - Wikipedia
Oh, I'd rather go and journey
Where the diamond crest is flowing
And run across the valley
Beneath the sacred mountain
And wander through the forest

Where the trees have leaves of prisms
And break the light in colors
That no one knows the names of

And when it's time, I'll go and wait
Beside a legendary fountain
Till I see your form reflected
In its clear and jeweled waters
And if you think I'm ready

You may lead me to the chasm
Where the rivers of our vision
Flow into one another

I will want to die beneath
The white cascading waters
She may beg, she may plead
She may argue with her logic
And mention all the things I'll lose

That really have no value
In the end, she will surely know:
I wasn't born to follow

nelle sue chiare acque ingioiellate.

mi puoi condurre all'abisso
dove i fiumi della nostra visione
confluiscono l'uno nell' altro

Vorrò tuffarmi sotto le bianche acque cascanti
Lei mi può pregare , lei mi può implorare
Lei può arguire con la sua logica

E menzionare tutte le cose che perderò
che in realtà non hanno alcun valore.
In fine lei sicuramente saprà
