The Einheitsfrontlied (German for "United Front Song") is one of the most famous songs of the German labour movement. It was written by Bertolt Brecht and composed by Hanns Eisler. The best-known rendition was sung by Ernst Busch.

After Adolf Hitler's coming to power in January 1933, the situation for left-wing movements in Germany drastically deteriorated. The antagonism between the Social Democratic Party and the Communist Party had long divided the German left. After the Nazis banned both parties and labour unions in the summer of 1933, many people, including Bertolt Brecht, believed that only a united front of social democrats and communists could fight back against fascism. In 1934, at the request of fellow theatre director Erwin Piscator, Brecht wrote the Einheitsfrontlied, calling for all workers to join the Arbeiter-Einheitsfront, the Workers' United Front. The song was performed the next year in the First International Workers Music Olympiad held in Strasbourg by a choir of 3,000 workers. Its first record was printed in 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, performed by communist actor and singer Ernst Busch. It was later published in Brecht's 1939 collection Svendborger Gedichte.

Hanns Eisler, who would later go on to compose the East German national anthem "Auferstanden aus Ruinen", intentionally kept the composition of "Einheitsfrontlied" simple and easy to follow, so it could be sung by workers without much musical training. In doing so, the song is quite march-like. In 1948, Eisler wrote a symphonic version, which was also sung by Ernst Busch and recorded for his Aurora-Projekt.

Ton Steine Scherben covered the song on their 1971 album Warum geht es mir so dreckig?Hannes Wader recorded the song on his 1977 album Hannes Wader singt Arbeiterlieder

Drum braucht er was zum Essen bitte sehr.
Es macht ihn ein Geschwätz nicht satt,
Das schafft kein Essen her.

Drum links, zwei, drei! Drum links, zwei, drei!

Drum links, zwei, drei! Drum links, zwei, drei!

Drum links, zwei, drei! Drum links, zwei, drei!
Wo dein Platz, Genosse, ist!
Reih dich ein in die Arbeitereinheitsfront,
Weil du auch ein Arbeiter bist.

Und weil der Prolet ein Prolet ist,
Drum wird ihn kein anderer befrein,
Es kann die Befreiung der Arbeiter nur
Das Werk der Arbeiter sein!

Drum links, zwei, drei! Drum links, zwei, drei!
Wo dein Platz, Genosse, ist!
Reih dich ein in die Arbeitereinheitsfront,
Weil du auch ein Arbeiter bist.

1. Canción del Frente Unido: Multilingual version of the International Brigades (Spanish, English, French, Catalan) - Spanish version by José Herrera Petere [1936]

As it is expected to be, the multilingual version of the International Brigades is from 1936 and is generally named in Spanish. The 1st stanza and the 1st refrain are also sung in Spanish. The 2nd stanza (plus refrain) is sung in English, the 3d one in French and the 4th and final one in Catalan (sometimes a 5th stanza is added, consisting in the 4th stanza of the German original). The Spanish translator is the poet José Herrera Petere (1909-1977); the English stanza is taken from Eric Bentley's English version. Similarly, the French stanza is taken from Le Front des Travailleurs, the French version from 1935. The Catalan stanza appears to be original. [RV]

And just because he’s human
He doesn’t like a pistol to his head
He wants no servants under him,
And no boss over his head.

So, left, two, three!
So, left, two, three!
To the work that we must do.
March on in the worker´s united front
For you are a worker, too.

Camarades, vers notre front!

Si tens gana no ho dubtis

Con traduzione inglese / With English translation

Still before the outbreak of the civil war the Einheitsfrontlied had been freely translated into Spanish. The version is titled Canción del Frente Popular (Popular Front Song). Very little is known about its credited author, a certain Félix Vicente Ramos; we only know about him that he wrote also a hymn to the “Gloriosa”, the Republican air force (a similar hymn composed by Rafael Alberti is much better known). Anyway, this is the best known complete version of the song in Spanish, obviously used and sung also in the Civil War. The first verse shows clearly influence from the Internationale.
Canción del Frente Popular

¡En pie, esclavos del mundo
Dispuestos al fascismo aniquilar!
Nuestro esfuerzo fecundo es,
La lucha en pro de la paz.

Luchad, luchad,
Con gran tesón
¡Por la solidaridad!
Reforzando las filas con ilusión
En el Frente Popular.

Será España la antorcha
Que al mundo proletario alumbrará.
En esas llamas rojas
El fascismo se abrasará.

Luchad, luchad,
Con gran tesón
¡Por la solidaridad!
Reforzando las filas con ilusión
En el Frente Popular.

¡Unios, proletarios!
Diría a los oprimidos Carlos Marx.
Si viviera el apóstol
Gritaría: ¡Unidad!

Luchad, luchad,

If little is known about the author of the Spanish version, still less, say nothing, is known about the Catalan translator. The Catalan version must be from the same year 1935 and follows the Spanish version rather faithfully, but with original characters (and it is shorter).[RV]
Cançó del Front Popular

Esclaus en peu de guerra,
LLuitem contra el nostre comú opressor!
Iŀluminem la terra
Amb nous vincles de pau i amor.

LLuitem sens fi,
Tot fent camí
Vers la solidaritat!
Enlairem triomfant la Senyera
Del gloriós Front Popular.

Serà a Espanya el viatge,
que als pobles lluitadors enfortirà,
I en vèncer, l’esclavatge en vivim
No hem d’oblidar.

LLuitem sens fi,
Tot fent camí
Vers la solidaritat!
Enlairem triomfant la Senyera
Del gloriós Front Popular.

3. Song of the United Front: Eric Bentley's English version [1934]

[RV]

The best known English version of the Einheitsfrontlied (one of its stanzas is used also in the multilingual version of the International Brigades) is probably also the very first one ever made of Bertolt Brecht's German original (1934). The version was made by then 18 years old Eric Bentley (born September 14, 1916, in Bolton, Lancashire) while he was studying at Oxford University College (with J. R. R. Tolkien as his tutor). Later, Eric Bentley moved to the United States, became an American citizen and, above all, one of Bertolt Brecht's most renowned international experts and translators (he also met Brecht in person at University of California, Los Angeles, in 1948, and became his collaborator until Brecht's death). Eric Bentley is not only the main English translator of Brecht's works: he also took his guitar and recorded for Folkways Record two whole albums of Brechtian songs never recorded before in English. Eric Bentley died on August 5, 2020, shortly before his 104th anniversary. [RV]
Song of the United Front

And just because he's human
A man would like a little bit to eat.
He wants no bull and a lot of talk,
That gives no bread and meat.

So left, two, three! So left, two, three!
To the work that we must do!
March on in the Workers' United Front,
For you are a worker too!

And just because he's human
He doesn't like a pistol to his head.

And no boss overhead.

So left, two, three! So left, two, three!
To the work that we must do!
March on in the Workers' United Front,
For you are a worker too!

And just because he's a worker
His job is all his own.
The liberation of the working class
Is a job for the worker alone.

So left, two, three! So left, two, three!
To the work that we must do!
March on in the Workers' United Front,
For you are a worker too!
For you are a worker too!

We're all human so therefore

Fine words are only empty air

March with us in the workers' united front;

3b. United Front Song: Version of the Popular Front [1936]

[RV]

As a matter of fact, generic attribution of this English version to the “Popular Front” is attested only by pesni.org, an important Russian song site, usually concise but very precise. Attribution made in this way means that little is known about the matter. The year traces back obviously to the Spanish Civil War: so, also the origin of this version could be referred to the International Brigades. An Arbeiterliederbuch of Jusos Osnabrück Land states that the version is taken from kampflieder.de; but, sadly, this glorious site no longer exists. The version is also found in a ”Socialist Song-Book in aid of the Militant fighting fund” published in April 1974 in Bristol and edited by Jenny Smith. [RV]

5. Il Fronte: The Italian version [1969] by Ciccio Giuffrida performed by Canzoniere del Vento Rosso

The best known version of the Einheitsfrontlied in Italian was made in 1969 by Ciccio Giuffrida for singing by Canzoniere del Vento Rosso (“Red Wind Song Ensemble”), tightly connected with UCI (Union of Italian Communists), the Maoist organization founded by Aldo Brandirali (who would become a member of Berlusconi’s Forza Italia and of the right-wing Catholic movement Comunione e Liberazione). Despite this, this version is still considered as the best one in Italian and even among the best versions of Brecht’s song in any language.
Il Fronte

Poichè un uomo e proprio un uomo
lui vuol poter mangiare tutti i giorni
lui vuole pane e non parole
pane a sazietà

La sazietà, la qualità
chi gli schiavi libererà
è il fronte unito del lavor
dunque vieni insieme a noi.

‎Poichè un uomo è proprio un uomo
lui vuole stare al caldo tutti i giorni
lui vuole scarpe e non parole
scarpe di qualità

La sazietà, la qualità
chi gli schiavi libererà
è il fronte unito del lavor
dunque vieni insieme a noi.

‎Poichè un uomo è proprio un uomo
lui vuole aver fratelli e non padroni
non vuole guerre nè prigioni
non vuol la schiavitù

La sazietà, la qualità
chi gli schiavi libererà
è il fronte unito del lavor
dunque vieni insieme a noi.

‎Poichè un operaio è un operaio
non vuole più potere ma il Potere
vieni anche tu lavoratore
nel fronte insieme a noi

La sazietà, la qualità
chi gli schiavi libererà
è il fronte unito del lavor
dunque vieni insieme a noi.

Egli desidera mangiare, e grazie mille

YHTEISRINTAMA

Kun ihminen ihminen on
niin leipää hän tarvitsee
Suunsoitto ei nälkää karkoita
eikä tyhjää täydeksi tee

Siis vasen yks' kaks'
siis vasen yks' kaks'
missä paikkasi, tiedätkö sen
Tännepäin, täällä marssivat työläiset
Sinä myös olet työläinen

Kun ihminen ihminen on
hälle vaatteita tarvitaan
Palopuheet ei suojele pakkaselta
eikä rumpujen paukutuskaan

Siis vasen yks' kaks'
siis vasen yks' kaks'
missä paikkasi, tiedätkö sen
Tännepäin, täällä marssivat työläiset
Sinä myös olet työläinen

Kun ihminen ihminen on
hän ei potkuja ota huvikseen
eikä toista ihmistä orjuuta
eikä alistu orjuuteen

Siis vasen yks' kaks'
siis vasen yks' kaks'
missä paikkasi, tiedätkö sen
Tännepäin, täällä marssivat työläiset
Sinä myös olet työläinen

Proletaarit kahleita teiltä
muut koskaan ei murskaksi lyö
Siksi työläisten vapautus olla voi
vain työväenluokan työ

Siis vasen yks' kaks'
siis vasen yks' kaks'
sido toveri taisteluvyös
Tule työläisten yhteisrintamaan
Sinä työläinen olet myös

Slut upp kamrat slut upp med oss,
kamrat din plats är här.
Slut upp i vår arbetarenhetsfront
du som också är proletär.

Och mänskan hon är mänska,
därför vill hon inte gärna trampas ner.
Så störta alla förtryckarna,
gör dig fri från allt slaveri.

Slut upp kamrat slut upp med oss,
kamrat din plats är här.
Slut upp i vår arbetarenhetsfront
du som också är proletär.

Du är proletär och därför
kan ingen annan göra dig fri.
Befrielsen är blott ditt eget verk
när du krossat all tyranni.

Slut upp kamrat slut upp med oss,
kamrat din plats är här.
Slut upp i vår arbetarenhetsfront
du som också är proletär.

First, I don't quite see that this Einheitsfrontlied is an "anti-war" song. Couldn't it as well be seen as a pro-civil-war song?

Secondly, the "no slaves" part of the song reminds to me the forced labour system of the Soviet Gulag. Didn't Brecht and Eisler know about this?

Nagkakaisang Hanay

Habang ang tao ay tao
Hahanap-hanapin nya ay pagkain
Walang saysay ang talumpati
Kung hindi naman makakain

Kaya't isa, dalawa,tatlo
Mga bisig nyo'y ikawing
Sa ating nagkakaisang hanay
Pagkat ika'y manggagawa rin

Habang ang tao ay tao
Di siya paaapi kanino man
Wala siyang aalipinin
Walang among sasambahin

Kaya't isa, dalawa,tatlo
Mga bisig nyo'y ikawing
Sa ating nagkakaisang hanay
Pagkat ika'y manggagawa rin

Habang may dalawang uri
Magkaisa tayong manggagawa
Walang iba pang magpapalaya
Sa kapwa natin manggagawa

Kaya't isa, dalawa,tatlo
Mga bisig nyo'y ikawing

1.

Dal a jövőről

1.
Az ember élte sorsát,
csak munkájával építi fel,
ki nem akarja jobbá tenni
napfényt sem érdemel.

Ha mindem munkás dolgozó
együtt vélünk harcba jő,
bátor összefogással a lánc lehull:
Szabad lesz majad a jövő!

2.
A dolgozók szívében
a jobb jövendő díszfénye ég,
hol szabadság lesz, igazság
és munkás testvériség.

Ha mindem munkás dolgozó
együtt vélünk harcba jő,
bátor összefogással a lánc lehull:
Szabad lesz majad a jövő!

3.
És mert a munkás sorsa
a milliókkal együtt halad,
a munkás csak a dolgozó
harcával lehet szabad.

Ha mindem munkás dolgozó
együtt vélünk harcba jő,
bátor összefogással a lánc lehull:
Szabad lesz majad a jövő!

The album contains an 8-page booklet with lyrics in the Hebrew language, photographs from the ghetto, and historical information about the songs in English. (Quote from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Eenheidsfrontlied (Links, twee, drie!)

1.

|: Dus links, twee, drie!
Dus links, twee, drie!
Kameraad, sluit j'in de rij.
Toon vandaag nog je solidariteit!
Kameraad, kom er nu bij. :|

2.
Zolang een mens een mens is,
wil hij schoenen en kleren zonder luis.
Beloftes krijgen hem niet warm,
zelfs geen koninklijk huis.

3.

Więc mu niemiły pański but.
Nie chce być sługą pasożyta,
Nie chce, by nad nim świszczał knut.

Robociarz zaś jest robociarzem,
Więc on ci w rękę wetknie broń!
Wolności drogę ci pokaże
Braterska, robotnicza dłoń!

Enhedsfrontsang

Da mensket nu er menske
Hvad så med mad og drikke, hvabehar?
Bar fede ord er ikke sundt
For nogen proletarer.

March, venstre om!
March, venstre om!
At din plads er dér, det klart!
Slut op i vor arbejderenhedsfront,
Du er arbejder selv, kammerat!

Da mensket nu er menske
Så vil det nødig tæves halvt ihjel,
Det vil ikke se nogen over sig
Og ingen under sin hæl.

March, venstre om!
March, venstre om!
At din plads er dér, det klart!
Slut op i vor arbejderenhedsfront,
Du er arbejder selv, kammerat!

Da slaven nu er slave
Vil ingen anden frigi ham en dag,
Og arbejderklassens befrielse er,
Og blir en arbejdersag.

March, venstre om!
March, venstre om!
At din plads er dér, det klart!
Slut op i vor arbejderenhedsfront,

Michael Boesen (guitar mm.)

Otto Gelsted's version (1888-1968)

https://da.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otto_G...

2.
For men’sket er et men’ske
og støvlehælen tåler ingen mand.
Han vil ikke ha’ slaver under sig
og over sig ingen tyran!

3.
Fordi vi er proletarer
så kan vi kun befri os selv.
Det er proletarens eget værk
at han ikke mer er træl.

Drum links, zwei, drei.
Drum links, zwei, drei,
Wo dein Platz Genosse ist,
Reih dich ein in die Arbeiter Einheitsfront,
Weil du auch ein Arbeiter bist!

Tu es un ouvrier, oui,
Viens avec nou ami!
Nous allon ver la grande union
De tou les vrais travaileurs.
Marchons au pas,
Marchons au pas,
Camarades vers autre front!

Cântecul frontului unit

1.

Ref:
Hei, stang, doi, trei!
Hei, stang, doi, trei!
Pentru munca pe care trebuie s-o facem
Merge in mars frontul unit al muncitorilor
Pentru tine, esti si tu un muncitor

2.
Vino cu noi prietene, nu te teme
Mergem spre marele sindicat
Al tuturor muncitorilor adevarati
Vino in frontul nostru camarade

3.
Intra in frontul tuturor muncitorilor
Cu prietenii tai din toate tarile
Frontul merge inainte muncitori
Sa luptam pentru un viitor mai bun

Pesem enotne fronte

In ker je človek človek
Potrebuje prosim lepo nekaj za jest
Govorjičenje ga ne bo nasitilo
To ne ustvari nobene hrane.

|:Zatorej: leva, dve, tri,
Zatorej: leva, dve, tri,
Kje je tvoje mesto tovariš.
Postavi se v enotno delavsko fronto
ker si delavec.:|

In ker je človek človek
Potrebuje tudi obleke in čevlje
Ne bo ga ogrelo govorjičenje
In bobnanje tudi ne.

In ker je človek človek
Ne mara škornja v obrazu
Pod sabo noče videti sužnja
Nad sabo ne gospodarja.

In ker je delavec delavec
Ga rešil ne bo nobeden drug
Osvoboditev delavcev je lahko
Samo delo delavcev samih.

1.
İnsan, insan olduğundan,

Acıkan karnı doymalıdır.

Boş laflarla karın doymaz,

Yiyecek ekmek olmalıdır.

Marş, sol ki üç!

Marş, sol ki üç!

Arkadaş, yerini bil…

İşçinin sınıf cephesine gir,

Çünkü sen de bir işçisin.

2.
İnsan, insan olduğundan,

Ezmekten, ezilmekten nefret eder.

Ne altında köle ister,

Ne üstte efendiye boyun eğer.

Marş, sol ki üç!

Marş, sol ki üç!

Arkadaş, yerini bil…

İşçinin sınıf cephesine gir,

Çünkü sen de bir işçisin.

3.
İşçi, işçi olduğundan,

Başkası onu kurtaramaz.

Çünkü işçileri kurtaracak olan,

İşçiden başkası olamaz!

Marş, sol ki üç!

Marş, sol ki üç!

Arkadaş, yerini bil…

İşçinin sınıf cephesine gir,

Çünkü sen de bir işçisin.

Samfylkingarsöngurinn

1.
Og fyrst þau eru mannfólk
þurfa þau víst mat á þeirra disk,
þau vilja ei þvaður og kjaftæði
sem engum gerir gott.

Svo, fram, tveir, þrír!
Svo, fram, tveir, þrír!
Til verksins sem við eigum í hönd!
Hönd í hönd í samfylkingu verkalýðs,
því ég og þú erum verkamenn!

2.
Og fyrst þau halda lífi,
þau þola ekki þrælahaldsins púl,
þau vilja ei veldi óréttlætis,
né græðgi auðmanna.

Svo, fram, tveir, þrír!
Svo, fram, tveir, þrír!
Til verksins sem við eigum í hönd!
Hönd í hönd í samfylkingu verkalýðs,
því ég og þú erum verkamenn!

3.
Og fyrst við erum verkamenn,
er blóðið í æðum okkar eldrautt,
okkar bræðralag er órofið,
nú, allir saman sem einn!

Svo, fram, tveir, þrír!
Svo, fram, tveir, þrír!
Til verksins sem við eigum í hönd!
Hönd í hönd í samfylkingu verkalýðs,
því ég og þú erum verkamenn!

4.

Grazie e scusa.
