‘Harambee’ è un concetto in lingua kiswaili che richiama il senso di comunità ed evoca lo sforzo compiuto insieme ad altre persone, la ‘collaborazione della comunità per una causa comune’. Harambee è una tradizione keniota di eventi di mutua assistenza all’interno delle comunità, che si esprime spesso in eventi di raccolta fondi volti ad attività di sviluppo: viene utilizzato quando è necessario intraprendere un lavoro di utilità comune, come aiutare una famiglia in difficoltà, o costruire una scuola o un edificio di culto.
Ciascuno offre quello che può, contributi in denaro o in natura, ma ‘tutti insieme’, tutti danno e tutti ricevono. Gli eventi di Harambee possono variare da eventi informali della durata di poche ore, in cui gli inviti vengono diffusi tramite passaparola, a eventi formali di più giorni pubblicizzati sui giornali. Questi eventi sono importanti in alcune parti dell’Africa orientale, come strumenti per costruire e mantenere le comunità. Ma in Kenya ‘harambee’ significa ‘insieme’ e si usa in generale quando è necessario uno sforzo comune per realizzare un obiettivo, molto spesso in ambito lavorativo.
