Life of a Native

A song about both the history the white American colonial state prepared for the natives and the role natives attribute themselves.

"Through our chiefs and our elders we are guided
Divided we fall but together stand united
For our earth and our water we will fight it
Our mother earth is crying and now you cant deny it
We are not the enemy that we're said to be
We're thinking of the generation that's ahead of me
So we'll continue to take the earth back for all of us
White Black or Brown well together we should stand up!"

On his Facebook page Okema writes:

'When I wrote Life of a Native I did a lot of research because I knew that in order to connect with my people I had to go to the darkness that has plagued my people for generations. I had to imagine myself being in the body of my ancestors and even thought to myself what if those were my babies. The thought of my babies being ripped away from me just for being Indigenous, I wouldn't even be able to imagine the outcome. Scouring through pictures and reading as many articles and stories I could find, I found myself crying and hurting for my people as I wrote it. "Of the time when you came uninvited, entered our homes and took our young kids crying, away from their families, the tragedies, left scars so DEEP no apologies will cover up the PAIN that YOU caused us!" '
[Spoken Intro by Floyd Red Crow Westerman]

[Chorus:]
So what you know about the life of a native
Growing up thru generations most hated
Everyday my people get discriminated
Based on the stereotypes you done created
Nowadays you have the audacity to pass us off
As a lower class nowadays you laugh at us
But now is the day where we finally had enough
From this day forth now are the days we're standing up

[Verse 1]:
To many years you oppressed us suppressed us
Infect us with your disease and left us
Millions of my people dead now you expect us
To forgive and forget like it don't affect us
You can try change history and hide
That it wasn't genocide but read between the lines and
You will find war crimes masterminded
Now you wonder why our people turn to suicide and
Have a hard time searching and finding
Who they really are cause their constantly reminded
Of the time when you came uninvited
Entered are homes and took our young kids crying
Away from their families the tragedies
Left scars so deep no apologies
Will ever cover up the pain that you caused us
Now is the day where you'll see my people stand up!

[Chorus]

[Verse 2]:
Now are the days you'll commend and respect us
Gone are the days you apprehend and offend us
Pretend to us you're a friend but forget trust
We all know the scheme that you hide in your agendas
We all see thru the deceit and the lies
A smile in disguise but your eyes can't hide it
But now is the time that we'll speak and we'll rise
All you want is our demise but we can't stay silent
Through our chiefs and our elders we are guided
Divided we fall but together stand united
For our earth and our water we will fight it
Our mother earth is crying and now you cant deny it
We are not the enemy that we're said to be
We're thinking of the generation that's ahead of me
So we'll continue to take the earth back for all of us
White Black or Brown well together we should stand up!

[Chorus]
