Bev Grant wrote the song “Inez” shortly after hearing about the story of Inez Garcia, who was convicted of murder for killing a man who raped her.

The legal case of Inez Garcia - who was convicted in 1974 of murder for killing a man who participated to rape her - became symbolic in the women’s movement, underscoring women’s right to fight back against violence. During her retrial in 1977, García was defended by the feminist lawyer Susan Jordan. Jordan dropped the "diminished capacity" defense, instead arguing simple self-defense. The argument convinced the jury, which exonerated the defendant.
[Bev]
It's an early spring day in a California town.
A woman at home is all alone.
The doorbell rings, she lets two men in.
We want to wait until a friend gets home.

[Bev & Jerry]
Well, time drags on, they're drinking beer.
Next thing you know, they're getting out of line.

[Bev & Gene]
Well, then a friend shows, they get the training balls.
The odds are two to one and one's behind.

[Bev]
INEEEEZ
jumped up and screamed, get out of my house, and went out to make sure they'd gone.
INEEEEZ
But they waited for her and they raped her and beat her right there on the ground.
INEEEEZ
In a state of rage, she went for her 22 and then went out to track them down.
INEEEEZ
Shot the 300-pound man who helped rape her and he fell dead on the ground.

After a while, they brought her to trial for murder in the first degree.
The man who had raped her chest a lot against her and naturally got off scot-free.
The defense said,

[Gene]
Your Honor, this woman was raped.
She's clear that her crime is justified.

The judge said,

[Jerry]
We're not here to judge an alleged rape.
It's murder for which she's being tried.

The DA said,

[Gene]
Inez, did you take off your panties? Were you wearing a bra?
Did you like it?

[Bev]
Inez screamed, I killed him and I'm glad that I did.
If the other man died, I'd feel fine.

A man on the jury said,

[Bev & Jerry]
After all, they were just trying to show her a good time.

We got the right, we got the right, we got the right to fight.
We got the right, we got the right.
You know, women got the right to fight.
Yeah, we got the right, we got the right, we got the right to fight.
We got the right, we got the right. Oh, women got the right to fight.

[Bev & Jerry]
INEEEEZ (women got the right, got the right to fight)
