Don't Swim Between the Flags

No one puts their children on a boat,
Unless the water is safer than the land.
Not so hard to grasp, not so hard to understand.
But it's easier to sit and read this shit
In the paper, and call it news,
like, "Oh, Prince George, he's so sweet,
and 18 grand on a present's fine
even if the other two year olds don't have enough to eat..."

It's easier to blame
The people hiding in the hold of a plane,
And not consider what they left
That was worse than almost certain death.

It's easier to stick with what we learned:
That our own good luck is something that we earned.
And that their kids don't deserve as much as yours,
'Cause yours were smart enough to be born on these shores.

And it's easier to keep up the pretence,
That the way to solve displacement is to build another fence.

It's easier to say "I'm sorry,
but she shouldn't have been on that lorry"
It's easier to blame
the dead if you don't find out their name,
It's easier to stick with what we learned:
That our own good luck was something that we earned.

And what's with the way they want to live?
And give their children a hope in hell?
What's with them having degrees and families?
It's almost like they're human as well.

But at least our leaders are on form,
'Cause it's always good to describe downtrodden people
As a swarm...

It's easier to be on the wrong side of history,
It's easier to blame than be ashamed.
It's easier to stick with what we learned:
That our own good luck was something that we earned.
But no one puts their children on a boat
Unless the water is safer than the land.
