As Christmas draws near consider the donkey
Mary rode an ancestor of those which display
Such patience despite the deadly bombs falling
Without discrimination on Palestine today
Mary thumb-printed the stoic beast’s neck
And all donkeys now bear this honourable mark
The breed boasts too the Cross of Jerusalem
Since carrying Christ on a Friday dark
Three decades span these decorations
Millennia separate, but link those sacred beasts
And today’s magnificent Equus asinus
But none this generation’s patience exceeds
The biblical lands are a killing ground
But the donkey of Gaza by nature is brave
Jenny and Jack ignore religious strife
Between Judaism and Islam today
When blood stains the Holy Land
What can a poor donkey do, you inquire
But persevere and carry our hopes
For a future of peace and a lasting ceasefire?

Donkeys have a reputation for being stubborn. Surely a situation which causes the deaths of thousands of children in Gaza shows powerful adults at their most unfeeling and unmoveable.
