The apartment mentioned in the first line was across the street from the adult school where Larry Moore was a teacher of English As A Second Language.
A flag was hanging in the window,
Of an apartment down the block,
Behind a photo of a soldier,
Who'd spent his last day in Iraq.
There was a note beneath the picture,
Bordered by red, white and blue.
Just a month ago, he perished; he was all of 22.
There’s a flag upon the coffin; they don’t show it on TV,
And they’re coming back more often,
It wouldn’t do for us to see,
All the death and desolation, the carnage and the strife,
And all the flags of every nation
Can’t bring back a single life.
A flag flies high behind the “leaders”
Who sent him into danger’s jaws,
With disingenuous deception, hollow words of “noble cause.”
Their agenda they keep hidden,
And the truth they do not tell.
It makes me wish that there were justice;
It makes me hope that there’s a hell.
There’s a flag above the prison,
There’s a flag above the base,
Expansionistic vision has the flag in every place,
Where the Empire is enforcing its predatory scheme,
When you pledge are you endorsing this domination dream?
A flag is seen upon the TV,
As they bring the evening news,
Cutting out what’s inconvenient,
Telling only what they choose.
Oh so smug and superficial,
As they mouth the party line.
But distortion and omission
Won’t make malignity benign.
There are flags all o’er the planet,
ut the fabric’s wearing thin,
And even statues made of granite,
Slowly crumble in the wind.
Rising o'er every nation, and no banner will withstand,
On the day of liberation in every single land,
On the day of liberation in every single land.
